Los Alamos National Laboratory Graduate Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Team Leader of Business Development within The Richard P. Feynman Center for Innovation (FCI), the Business Development Associate (BDA) will support the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Business Development Executive (BDE) Team while learning the practice of business development at LANL.

In this role you will:

(1) Gather business intelligence to support technology transition

(2) Draft commercial plans for new inventions resulting from LANL R&D to help inform decision making on intellectual property (IP) investments

(3) Learn the basics of IP portfolio development and management as it relates to creating value at LANL

(4) Observe and learn how to initiate and execute business contracts, e.g. Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), License Agreements, Strategic Partnership Projects with Non-Federal Entities (SPP-NFEs), and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs)

(5) Support customer discovery activities to identify commercially viable technologies and facilitate their commercialization.

With direct oversight from the BDE Team Leader (TL), the BDA will: work with program and line managers, scientists and principal investigators throughout the Laboratory to understand the overall technical capabilities at LANL, and the intellectual property landscape; review business plans and presentations; and inform FCI’s proactive marketing of LANL technologies.

The position is located in Los Alamos, NM.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Masters of Business Administration program and must have completed a minimum of 6 semester credit hours (or equivalent) of course work the semester before hire.

  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent).

  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

  • Demonstrated basic skills in writing targeted technical and business topics

  • Experience building situational awareness using a wide variety of resources (e.g., subscription-based tools, internet resources, information from colleagues, etc.)

  • Experience assessing capabilities and technologies while linking technology to the needs of industry and consumers and/or other Federal agencies

  • Understanding of intellectual property in how it’s used in business transactions around technology that is deployed for economic growth

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a science or an engineering discipline

  • Experience developing marketing proposals leading to new customer relationships

  • Ability to interact effectively with internal/external stakeholders and build/maintain networks based on sound relationship management practices

  • Experience managing time sensitive projects with limited resources and dynamically evolving requirements

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
