What You Will Do
MPA-Q is a recently formed organization. The new group leader will be tasked with developing a unified strategic vision for the group that will leverage the unique breadth of the group spanning atomic to condensed matter physics with a common core interest of quantum phenomena and their exploitation for materials, measurement, and secure communications. This group is expected to play a key role in asserting LANL’s leadership in the National Quantum Initiative.
As Group Leader, the selected candidate is responsible for leadership, integration and program growth, and oversight of MPA-Q, a 45-person organization (including a substantial postdoc and student population) which carries out fundamental R&D for sponsors including Basic Energy Sciences (BES) materials core research, LDRD, and Global Security programs. MPA-Q research focuses on the discovery, understanding and exploitation of quantum phenomena ranging from single quanta to condensed matter.Areas of research include the study of fundamental properties of matter, including quantum materials, correlated electron systems, atomic qubits as well as Bose-Einstein condensates, and novel materials for electrolysis. The development of new quantum-based measurement systems involves atomtronics, microfluidics and non-traditional magnetic resonance tools including NMR at extreme conditions of high pressure and very low temperature. Research in quantum-based secure communications includes optical fiber and free-space systems.
The Group Leader's responsibilities include:
Developing an integrated scientific vision that willoptimally utilize the strengths of the group;
Providing technical leadership and management of personnel and resources to ensure the scientific vitality of the organization and to secure programmatic work alignedwith DOE, NNSA andLANL priorities;
Development of new programs based on innovative combinations of the group’s core competencies in response to the Laboratory's and national needs;
Integrity, the ability to establish trust, commitment to scientific and technical excellence, delivery on commitments and operational effectiveness;
Nurturing an intellectual environment conducive to scientific research, development, and innovation that retains and attracts the highest caliber scientific staff and ensures appropriate mentoring and supervision of MPA-Q’s postdocs and students;
Implementing all applicable safety, environment, security, and quality, compliance and administrative policies;
Being a key member of the Materials Physics and Applications Division Leadership team, championing the strategic, tactical, and operational success of the division in partnership with colleague group- and division-level managers.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Outstanding scientific research and technical leadership in a scientific field relevant to MPA-Q as evidenced by publications, citations, and presentations and other relevant metrics;
Demonstrated success in developing and executing strategic priorities;
Record of effective leadership in a complex scientific organization;
A record of success in developing new program funding initiatives and a network of contacts with program sponsors;
Record of effective teamwork within and across organizational boundaries and consensus building and demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
Demonstrated ability to manage safely, securely and effectively diverse research facilities with chemical, radiological, and other high hazards;
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage financial and human resources with commitment to AA/EEO/Diversity objectives, staff career development, and mentorship of junior scientists.
Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.
Good working knowledge of laboratory financial, management, and ES&H practices.
Familiarity with DOE programs.
Education Required: Minimum requirement is a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. A Ph.D. degree in a field related to on-going work in MPA-Q is strongly preferred.
