Los Alamos National Laboratory Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The AOT-AE R&D; Manager 4 (Group Leader) will serve as part of the AOT management team to provide leadership for the Division. There will be a strong focus on the success of the LANSCE accelerator complex and associated user Facility, on programmatic-focused accelerator research and development, and on other national security accelerator project initiatives, together with a focus on developing the core capability in accelerator and beam science and technology. The successful applicant will provide strong technical and managerial leadership and will oversee a broad range of basic and applied accelerator science and technology programs for national security and non-defense applications, including participation in the development of projects both internal and external to the Los Alamos National Laboratory. In addition, the Group Leader is expected to nurture and develop technical and professional excellence within the group and to work with group members to develop skills that contribute to their professional development. The position will entail solving problems (technical, fiscal, project, managerial), performing analyses needed to generate solutions, and interacting with all levels of personnel both internal and external to the Group, Division and Laboratory. The Group Leader will be responsible for ensuring a safe, secure and environmentally compliant work environment through the proper implementation of integrated safety management, integrated work management, integrated security and safeguards management, and environmental management.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated achievement in one or more of the group’s thrust areas as evidenced by publication record and national/international reputation in the accelerator or national security/directed-energy communities.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical programs in partnership with other line and program organizations in support of institutional and national needs.

  • Demonstrated success in meeting or exceeding the expectations of customers and stakeholders and in meeting organizational mission commitments and deliverables.

  • Demonstrated ability to nurture and develop both scientific and technical support staff.

  • Demonstrated ability in effective communication with subordinates, peers, and superiors.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated success in all functional areas of line, operations and project leadership and management (e.g. excellent strategic and tactical planning skills; excellent fiscal management skills; demonstrated experience in developing and managing a productive workforce; demonstrated commitment and support of AA/EEO policies) of a complex scientific/technical organization.

  • Knowledge of Laboratory, DOD, DOE, and other national programs of relevance to the Group and Division's activities.

  • Demonstrated success in setting priorities for and leading efficient, graded implementation of safety, security and safeguards, environmental management and other core Laboratory business requirements.

  • Experience at an accelerator, neutron, or synchrotron research facility with a strong user program, or similar large scientific facility.

Education: Minimum requirement is a Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university with 7+ years of relevant accelerator science and technology experience. Ph.D. in science or engineering is preferred.
