Los Alamos National Laboratory Hazardous Materials Driver (Transportation Specialist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Hazardous Material Driver, is a Transportation Specialist 2 position in the Materials Management Group (OP-MM) of the Operations Programs Division (OP). As a team member of the Hazardous Materials Team, you will work under the direct supervision of the Shipping Team Leader and will support Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) programs with delivery of hazardous/materials of trade/non-hazardous material received at the SM-30 Distribution Center.

As the selected candidate, you will be responsible for: segregating and transporting incoming shipments of hazardous materials; completing documents required under 49CFR for transportation; have the ability and training to tie down and block and brace material; the ability to operate all fork lifts of every size; the ability to obtain all the requirements to become an authorized shipper; have the ability to follow policies and procedures without compromising safety and security; and may also be responsible for x-raying material being delivered to the nuclear facility (TA-55). This individual will also need to be familiar with handling classified material.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Current or previous Department of Transportation Hazardous (HMPT) and Basic Radioactive Material Shipping Training.

  • Seasoned/experienced in computer based Business Systems and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Ability to obtain HRP (Human Reliability Program) certification.

  • Ability to obtain hazardous Authorized Shipper certification.

  • Ability to obtain an active Q Clearance.

  • Class A CDL with hazardous material endorsement.

Education/Experience: Position requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to the occupation.

Essential Job Functions (Can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Lifting 30+ lbs.

Work Environment: outdoors, handle hazmat packages, driving government vehicle.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience or knowledge with Traffic/Shipping Operations at a D.O.E / NNSA contractors facility.

  • HRP (Human Reliability Program) certified.

  • Knowledge of LANL sites and facilities.

  • Current Authorized Shipper (by ground) Certification.

  • Working knowledge of processes to ship hazardous materials.

  • Working knowledge of Federal regulations for hazardous materials.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the one year of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.Please refer to Laboratory Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.
