Los Alamos National Laboratory High Explosive and Equation of State Modeling Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Eulerian Codes Group (XCP-2) in the X-Computational Physics Division and the Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics Group (T-3) in the Theoretical Division are seeking motivated candidates for a joint postdoctoral appointment. In this role, the successful candidate will work with a team in pushing the limits of high explosive (HE) modeling while focusing on the complexities of equations of state (EOS) capabilities in Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) multiphysics hydrodynamics codes.

Among the possible areas the successful candidate will investigate are:

  • Pushing the limits of HE modeling in an Eulerian hydrodynamics code through cross-code comparisons, validation with experimental data, and/or verification with analytical solutions

  • Assessing constraints placed on EOS models by hydrodynamics algorithms and establishing various metrics for both thermodynamic consistency and high performance

  • Examining the fidelity of a variety of multi-material models in Eulerian hydrodynamics codes, assessing their computational efficiency, robustness, and physical applicability

  • Exploring the necessity for “Next generation burn models” which account for microstructural behavior of materials at the mesoscale

XCP-2 maintains the Eulerian AMR (Adaptive Mesh Refinement) numerical simulation tools for LANL’s national security design community, the Inertial Confinement Fusion High Energy Density Physics user community as well as University collaborators researching astrophysical phenomena. Our projects bring together a diverse community of computer and physical scientific expertise to develop multi-physics models for advanced predictive software capabilities. We serve as the interface to judiciously integrate LANL’s Eulerian simulation tools with results produced from coordinated efforts between experimentalists and physical model developers. XCP-2 ensures that state-of-the-art Eulerian numerical techniques are robustly integrated; executing code development, testing, and support, within an environment adhering to Software Quality Assurance (SQA) guidelines.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience in classical thermodynamics

  • Experience in continuum/fluid mechanics

  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, C/C++, Fortran, etc. and/or scientific software such as Matlab, Mathematica, etc.

  • Demonstrated expertise in physics or engineering through peer-reviewed publications and technical presentations

  • Demonstrated skills in effective verbal and written technical communication

  • Highly effective interpersonal skills for communicating with a team of people that have a variety of experiences and backgrounds

  • A strong desire to learn in a variety of research areas and an ability to bring ideas from multiple fields to bear on complex problems

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance, which typically requires US Citizenship

Education/Experience: PhD in physics, engineering, mathematics, or a related field. A candidate may be considered for a postdoctoral position within five years of receiving their Ph.D. or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with mathematical methods of physics and engineering such as vector calculus, analysis of differential equations, linear algebra, etc.

  • Proficiency and demonstrated experience with parallel scientific computing

  • Extensive experience in C++, Fortran, or Python

  • Familiarity with high performance computing and Unix/Linux computing environments

  • Demonstrated experience working and engaging in collaborative environments, especially in cross-disciplinary research

  • Basic knowledge of concepts in shock physics
