Los Alamos National Laboratory High Temperature Aqueous Chemistry/Geochemistry Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do_

The Earth and Environmental Science Division at Los Alamos National Lab is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Earth and Environmental Observations group (EES-14) and participate in an experimental program aimed at investigation of the behavior of heavy metals in sub- and supercritical aqueous fluids. The program is primarily focused on determination of thermodynamic properties of aqueous species at high T and P and of co-existing solid phases and solid solutions. The main field of interest for the program is the behavior of Rare Earth Elements (Lanthanides+Y+Sc) and Actinides, but the list of elements of interest can be expanded as the project evolves. The fields of interest include both high density, liquid like, and low density, vapor-like, fluids. The Postdoctoral Research Associate is expected to closely collaborate with scientists from our hydrothermal group, a group focusing their studies on calorimetric techniques, our internal and external collaborators focusing their study on the XAS synchrotron-based spectroscopy, and theoreticians supporting our experimental efforts. The funding for the position is available for the period from October 1st 2018 until September 30st 2021. Initial post-doctoral appointments are for two year periods, but extensions are possible.

Candidates with experience in high-temperature hydrothermal experiments, XAS, Raman, or UV-vis in situ high temperature spectroscopy are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience with DFT or AIMD calculations, or experience in Impedance Spectroscopy or Dielectric Spectroscopy will be considered as an asset.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A demonstrated background and hands-on experience conducting chemical/geochemical experiments examining interactions in aqueous media.

  • Proven ability to work creatively and independently.

  • A demonstrated record of technical excellence and innovative thinking as evidenced by publication and presentation records and letters of reference.

Education: Candidates must have completed all PhD requirements by commencement of the appointment and must be within the last five years of completion of the PhD, specializing in geochemistry, chemistry or related field.
