Los Alamos National Laboratory In Situ Characterization Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies in Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA-CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking outstanding postdoctoral candidates to develop novel in situ transmission electron and optical microscopy, scattering, and spectroscopy techniques to study the effects of mechanical strain on physical properties of inorganic materials focusing on thermal and electrical transport mechanisms. The projects span several areas including characterizing the effect of uniaxial and biaxial strain in creating localized defect emission sites in 2D materials in order to enable strategies for next-generation single photon sources required for all-optical quantum communication technologies. These experiments are conducted with a suite of capabilities including confocal photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopes, and the CINT Integration Laboratory (a class 100 cleanroom). The successful candidate will contribute to a one-of-a-kind collaborative environment consisting of accomplished scientists in electrothermal physics, nanomaterials, ultrafast optical spectroscopy, and in situ electron microscopy (additional details can be found at cint.lanl.gov). What You Will Do
Minimum Job Requirements:
PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or closely related discipline and an experimental background in electron microscopy, nanofabrication, or ultrafast optical spectroscopy with a focus on in situ characterization technique development.
Strong publication record.
Demonstrated ability to work creatively and independently in collaboration with large interdisciplinary research teams.
Demonstrated ability to communicate in both oral and written English, both technically and interpersonally.
Strong scientific record as demonstrated by publication in high impact factor journals, strong citation of published work quantified through total citation count and Hirsch-index, and recognition through national or international honors and awards.
Experience with in situ transmission electron microscopy including low-dose phase contrast, low-dose STEM, scanning nano beam electron diffraction algorithm technique development, and electrical biasing sample holders.
Experience with operating and maintaining ultrafast optical spectroscopic systems, micro-Raman/photoluminescence systems such as the Horiba LabRAM HR Evolution or custom Princeton Instruments-based systems, and complex ultrafast amplified laser systems.
Proficiency in computer programming (NI LabView, Wolfram Mathematica, or similar) for computer-controlled data acquisition and analysis, proficiency with data acquisition using Keithley low-level precision instruments.
Education: A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or closely related discipline is required. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. at time of being proposed for review by the committee and will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
