What You Will Do

Person hired to this posting will work in Mercury Nevada.

This position will be filled at either the Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 1 or Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 2, depending on the skills, education and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 1 ($60,400 - $95,900)

IH&S Professional 1 works primarily under supervision and follows established directions and receives detailed instructions on new projects or assignments. Work is reviewed for accuracy, soundness of judgment and overall adequacy. Uses judgment within defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate action.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, has the ability to work effectively within an interactive team environment and provide excellent customer service.

  • Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 2 ($72,500 - $118,200) IH&S Professional 2 works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Determines approach to solutions, plans schedule and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives.

In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:

  • The IHS Professional will use professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Familiarity and basic working knowledge of DOE and regulatory requirements related to industrial hygiene and safety in a research environment.

  • Familiarity and basic working knowledge of industrial hygiene/safety-related risk assessments and corrective actions.

  • Familiarity and basic working knowledge and application of techniques and procedures for industrial hygiene and safety exposure assessment (both qualitative and quantitative), to include sampling and sampling techniques/instrumentation, sample analysis, and selection/implementation of controls.

  • Familiarity and basic working knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.

  • Familiarity and basic working experience and skill in the preparation and communication of industrial hygiene technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.

Additional Job Requirements for (Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 2):

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the (IH&S Prof 2) level requires:

  • Knowledge of DOE and regulatory requirements related to industrial hygiene in a research environment.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of industrial hygiene/safety-related risk assessments and corrective actions.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge and application of techniques and procedures for industrial hygiene and safety exposure assessment (both qualitative and quantitative), to include sampling and sampling techniques/instrumentation, sample analysis, and selection/implementation of controls.

  • Working knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.

  • Experience and skill in the preparation and communication of industrial hygiene and safety technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.

Desired Skills:

  • Active DOE Clearance.

  • Working knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, and activities, programs and data collection tools.

  • Knowledge and application of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Work Management, and other industrial hygiene and safety procedures.

  • Experience identifying, applying, and interpreting federal codes, standards, and regulations in several IH program areas, including chemical safety, beryllium, exposure assessment, and other IH areas.

Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 1 Education Required: Position typically requires 2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An Associates or Bachelor’s degree (in a related field) is preferred.

Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 2 Education Required: A bachelor’s degree in related technical discipline and a minimum of five years of related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and professional-level experience.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Reporting to the JLON Deployed Environmental Safety and Health Team Leader Located at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site in Mercury Nevada. The Industrial Hygiene and Safety (IHS) Professional is responsible for implementing LANL Industrial Hygiene and Safety program, policies and procedures associated with the recognition, measurement, evaluation, and control of potential health and safety hazards. The IHS Professional will provide daily industrial hygiene and safety support to programmatic and facility organizations to ensure the protection of workers, compliance with Laboratory ES&H requirements, and mission success. This position is an opportunity for a motivated, innovative, and customer focused professional to support an established ESH support Group.
