What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Support R&D engineering activities as it relates to production agency inspection engineering with specific responsibilities in the areas of inspection and acceptance testing. Primary work scope will be in support of detonator and/or plutonium inspection processes for the Quality Engineering and Inspection Group, which is responsible for the quality and inspection of War Reserve components. The selected candidate will be expected to develop solutions to complex problems, improve inspection cycle times, and deploy inspection processes capable of meeting accuracy requirements. Work will be accomplished without considerable direction; expect significant latitude in determining objectives of assignments, and determine the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.

R&DEngineer 1 ($81,600 - $133,400)

The successful candidate will:

  • Adheres to engineering policies, programs, procedures and practices.

  • Applies and interprets standard discipline-specific engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods and tools to provide solutions for an assortment of moderately complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires review of identifiable data.

  • Takes responsibility for understanding tasks and own contributions to deliverables. Sets direction and goals for assigned tasks and manages his/her own assignments.

R&D Engineer 2 ($89,900 - $148,300)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 2 will be required to:

  • Contributes to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives.

  • Contributes to the completion of milestones on multiple projects. Contributes to the achievement of programmatic objectives.

  • Develops a technical approach, using creativity in applying standard practices and procedures, and leads technical decisions, including selections of technical alternatives, for assigned work.

  • Sets direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person. Scopes tasks within a project and defines deliverables at task level. Leads specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule and budget.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge and proven experience in mechanical engineering or related discipline and dimensional inspection.

  • Knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing projects associated with inspection (e.g. coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques, and open setup techniques).

  • Experience developing inspection processes including specifying production equipment, characterizing process variables, and maintaining process performance.

  • Experience working in a team environment as demonstrated by successful implementation of process requirements including work instructions, user qualification and training and maintenance considerations.

  • Demonstrated experience working in environments with a high level of operational formality.

  • Demonstrated record of excellence in safety, security, and quality by demonstrated implementation in process designs.

  • Working knowledge of quality assurance standards such as NQA-1, NAP-24 and DOE Order 414.D.

  • DOE Order 426.2 requires a BS, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 2 level requires:

  • Experience training users, publishing user instructions, and maintaining process performance.

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and ability to provide technical leadership on measurement and testing systems (e.g. coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques, and open setup techniques).

Desired Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing projects associated with manufacturing.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance and Conduct of Operations requirements.

  • Demonstrated experience using Coordinate Measuring Machines.

  • Advanced degree in related field.

  • Industrial manufacturing experience with high volume product output.

  • Working knowledge of the Defense Program Business Process Systems (DPBPS) requirement for weapons design and manufacturing.

  • Demonstrated success working in a team environment that includes technicians, engineers, and quality professionals.

R&D Engineer 1 Education Required: Typical educational requirement is a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.

R&D Engineer 2 Education Required: Typical educational requirement is a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program, and a minimum of two (2) years experience.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, § 712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
