Los Alamos National Laboratory Lead Systems Engineer (R&D Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Join our team! The successful candidate will be a member of the Advanced System Development group, Q-18, which is responsible for supporting defense system conceptualization and subsystem technology development.
The selected candidate for this position will be the lead system engineer for non-tail number related experiments including Proton Radiography, hydrodynamic, and Subcritical Experiments. This role includes interfacing with the program leads across many divisions within the laboratory (W-11, E-5, NNSS, PF, J, Sigma) as well as many other organizations within the national security complex to ensure experimental hardware is designed, fabricated, and assembled for experiments.
The successful candidate will:
Serve as the lead engineer for non-tail number related experiments
Meet all project deliverables and schedule deadlines
Interpret and clarify customer technical requirements
Define and maintain technical compliance and traceability to customer requirements
Lead design for package development
Lead the development and fabrication of assembly tooling required for the device
Review drawings having Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
Lead design and manufacturability reviews to ensure the experimental device is executable and will meet its objectives
Adapt to evolving R&D requirements while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule
Develop component acquisition plans and continuously interface with a variety engineers, machinists, inspectors, material scientists and others to acquire experimental device hardware
Ensure all Safety and Security requirements are met
Ensure successful integration of the device with the experimental facility and data acquisition systems. Work with management, account managers, and customers to plan assembly durations, costs, and resources
Review Technical Procedures to ensure work is going to be executed safely and securely and meet product requirements
Trouble-shoot any issues arising with the experiment
Coordinate multiple teams to ensure overall deliverables are being met
Generate final reports to document the device design, assembly, and execution from the system engineering perspective
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience executing experiments including design, planning, fabrication, assembly, and test support operations.
Project Management Experience
Project Management experience including leading planning and execution of projects.
Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and with changing priorities.
Experience in working on and delivering multiple products on schedule.
Engineering Software Knowledge and Experience
Demonstrated experience with the use of typical engineering software for design, analysis, and testing.
Demonstrated Experience with engineering design and analysis of components, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods, and fabrication methods.
Demonstrated knowledge of the document/configuration management systems.
Communication & Team Dynamics
Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers.
Ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently or as part of a team with other engineers, scientists, and technicians.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Systems engineering experience, including requirements identification and management.
Experience assisting other engineers, scientists, and technicians on weapon systems tests.
Experience withProton Radiography, hydrodynamic, and/or Subcritical Experiments.
Experience with operations or tests involving high explosives.
Experience with assembly methods and equipment for obtaining required component attributes.
Demonstrated operational experience in testing related to safety and security requirements.
Experience working in a radiological work environment.
Working knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile.
Knowledge of the document/configuration management systems such as PDM Link.
Experience in the compliant execution of classified parts management requirements.
Active Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
