The Institutional Quality & Performance Assurance Division Office (IQPA-DO) is dedicated to provide critical, expert, and timely services to ensure operational excellence is achieved and sustained by providing trustworthy and transparent continuous improvement and quality systems in support of Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Program Office is part of IQPA-DO; providing tools, methodologies, and support with meeting facilitation, clarification of roles and responsibilities, process flow, and process improvements throughout Los Alamos National Laboratory. LSS specialist may spend much of their time in the field working a variety of projects for IQPA and the institution.
This position will be filled at the Lean Six Sigma 3 level. The Lean Six Sigma (LSS) 3 specialist is a mid-level positon. Lean six sigma specialists are individual contributors trained to become change agents throughout the institution enabling achievement of the Laboratory’s performance goals and mission. Specialist ultimately provide the leadership for change initiative by setting direction, managing risks, and designing breakthrough solutions. The overall goal is to stimulate creative and innovate approaches to process improvements.

Knowledge, Skills and Expertise
Demonstrated experience using Lean Six-Sigma tools, techniques, and methodologies such as strategic gap analysis, lean, design for sigma, Kaizen events, etc. to drive organizational change through the use of internal and/or external benchmarks from private or public sectors to manage issues or corrective actions. Uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Frequently contributes to the development of new theories and methods. Considered expert in field within the organization.
Strategize with leadership to develop and deliver a structured approach to projects fundamental to the success of organizational goals and objectives. Develop resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Instill and execute process improvements tied to organizational goals and objectives.
Demonstrated experience successfully interacting with customers involving matters related to quality, including the ability to advise and coach customers while promoting continuous improvements within a learning environment. Educate and mentor internal customers on lean six sigma principles and practices; develop projects and training to complete the projects and develop skills of the people.
Interaction and Collaboration
Maintain a positive and professional image at all times by optimizing communication techniques and responses at all levels of the institution. Network with stakeholders across organizations and contacts outside own area of expertise to create key relationships that are pivotal for success. Influence decisions and compelling actions in an environment that may be highly resistant to change.
Demonstrated experience in team-building skills. Develop and maintain key relationships.
Collaborate with peer LSS specialist. Periodically conduct peer reviews of LSS products. Educate and mentor junior LSS professionals on lean six sigma principles and practices.
Supervision and Leadership
Work is accomplished without considerable direction. May coordinate activities of other personnel.
Responsibility and Accountability
Exerts significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determines the methods and procedures needed for new assignments. Prioritize resources and leverage leaders to effect change and sustain results. Responsible for process improvement plans, lean, and/or Kaizen team deliverables. Responsible to manage your own portfolio of projects.
Education and Years of Relevant Experience
A minimum of 8 years of related experience. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.
Additional Education and Certification
Master’s degree in a related field and/or current professional certification as a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB) or Master Black Belt.
Active DOE “Q” or other Top Secret clearance.

This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
