Los Alamos National Laboratory Machining Process Engineer (R&D Engineer 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Pit Technologies Machining Group (PT-2) is seeking skilled and talented mechanical engineers or machining Engineers. PT-2 requires innovative engineers with expertise and experience in manufacturing, CNC machining, programming, tooling design, and process engineering.

The successful candidate will provide technical support as the process/system engineer in developing processes, improving processes, troubleshooting, and manufacturing support. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting operations as needed to maintain equipment and ensure the operability of manufacturing processes. Responsible for identifying process improvements and leading development activities within the Plutonium Facility (PF-4). Individuals working in this position will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure compliance with Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Quality, and Safety Management programs. Serve as a contributing member of the R&D and Operations teams to address engineering challenges.

  • Contribute at a fully-functioning level to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D and Operations initiatives.

  • Develop new methods, technologies, and analysis techniques for institutional programs.

  • Ensure programmatic objectives through the provision of project management and engineering support to successfully complete milestones.

  • Mentor early career staff, postdocs, and students.

  • Independently present specific aspects of engineering assignments at project meetings.

  • Adapt to evolving R&D requirements while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule imperatives.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience performing a broad range of complex engineering, including experience designing a complete project, system, or component through work experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing and component testing operations (e.g. mechanical testing, machining, and component assembly).

  • Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement concepts and tools.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in design; planning; and executing research and development projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and define technical problems, measure variables, analyze the problem, implement solutions, and control process.

  • Must have a strong record of technical accomplishments (provide examples).

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of programing languages for CNC machine tools.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with one or more of the following software types: Design (SolidWorks or CREO-2.0); Finite Element (ANSYS or ABAQUS), and/or acquisition and analysis (LabVIEW and MATLAB).

  • Existing DOE “Q” clearance (or similar).

Education: Typical requirement is a BS, MS or PhD in mechanical engineering from an Accreditation Board or Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program. A BS and 3 years of experience or an advanced degree is required. Advanced degrees in engineering or similar technical fields are preferred.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
