Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Machining Research Technologist (Research Technologist 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

You will work independently as a member of the Target Engineering and Fabrication Team in the Engineered Materials Group, MST‑7. This team of skilled professionals is primarily responsible for the engineering, design, fabrication, assembly, and metrology of targets and diagnostic parts for the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) programs. Many of the targets and parts are millimeter or sub‑millimeter in size with typical dimensional tolerances range from a few nanometers to a few micrometers. These targets contain fragile and unconventional materials, such as: thin films, fibers, fragile coatings, low‑density foams and beryllium. They are often quite complex and are generally used to validate computer codes; therefore, they must be as close to perfect as can be achieved by state-of-the-art manufacturing technology. Any imperfections must be measured, characterized and documented. Since target designs are continually changing and tend to become more complex with time, fabrication methods must continually be developed. The selected candidate must be able to work from complex drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes, EDM and a variety of general machine shop tooling. These services are provided to a variety of customers both internal and external to the Laboratory including Science Campaigns C1, C4, and C10, the weapons program including LEP, ESC, and SFI, Global Security programs, and TA-55 operations. Fabrications range in size from microscopic (100 micron components) to large (30 inch assemblies) and include common materials as well as materials with toxic, pyrophoric, and/or other hazardous characteristics.

The responsibilities associated with this position will be:

Machine Components as directed by or discussed with supervisor

  • Develop fixtures for operation/s

  • Develop machining code

  • Machine parts within schedule and to specifications

  • Serialize and perform in process & final inspection of components and report to Target Coordinator

Improve capabilities

  • Demonstrated ability to provide customers with reliable and accurate estimates for fabrication work coming into a machine shop.

  • Ability to see and handle and assemble delicate mm size parts.

  • Ability to use Solidworks / Camworks CAD / CAM software for fabrication of hardware on CNC machines.
