Los Alamos National Laboratory Manufacturing Project Engineer (Technical Project Manager 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Manufacturing Project Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico and require frequent travel to Nevada.

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations (J-2) Group is looking for a Manufacturing Project Engineer with pressure vessel Manufacturing Engineering experience to oversee the group’s mission to fabricate and produce impulsively loaded pressure vessels for the DOE Complex. Construction of these vessels adhere to ASME Boiler & Pressure Code Div, 1, 2, 3 and comply with NQA-1 requirements.
Manufacturing Project Engineer 2 ($94,100-$155,700):
The Manufacturing Project Engineer 2 will work with engineers, designers, procurement specialists, and quality assurance to coordinate with outside vendors and to act as a technical representative for various procurement contracts. The successful candidate will support the development of technical specification documents, oversee drawing packages, ensure inspection and testing requirements are met, generate procurement packages, evaluate bid packages, solicit and manage vendor activities to ensure compliance of contract scope of work and deliverables. This position will require routine travel to vendor locations to oversee and ensure contract compliance as well as maintain required contract documentation.
Manufacturing Project Engineer 3 ($113,100-$190,900)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, for the level 3 position the successful candidate will have similar duties albeit at a higher level.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Working knowledge and experience in manufacturing of pressure vessels and application of consensus standards (e.g., ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code). Demonstrated knowledge in fabrication techniques such as forgings, rolling, casting, and heat treatment. Experience in developing technical specification documents, drawing packages, and understanding of ASME Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Experience in developing and interpreting material inspection reports and understanding of Quality Standards pertaining to manufacturing. Hands-on mechanical and/or manufacturing engineering experience and exposure to a manufacturing environment.
Contract & Project Management:
Demonstrated experience in managing complex fabrications, which includes developing purchase requisitions including scope of work, technical specifications, and drawing packages. Experience managing subcontractor design, manufacturing, and dimensional inspection requirements. Experience supervising the technical aspects of fabrication contracts, including oversight, subcontract files maintenance, program and subcontractor interface, and subcontractor performance.
Prior experience working in a fast-paced engineering team. Demonstrated ability to interact with peers and customers and to present technical issues to lay, managerial, and expert-level audiences, both verbally and in written form as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring, and coordinating the work of others.
Additional Job Requirements Manufacturing Project Engineer 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Experience with ASME B&PV Section VIII, Divisions 1, 2, and 3 and or Code Case 2564, API 579, and AWS Welding Codes. Working knowledge of non-destructive inspection techniques (e.g., helium leak testing, ultrasonic testing, dye penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, etc.). Demonstrated experience in developing technical specifications. Prior experience acting as a LANL Subcontract Technical Representative (STR), AdSTR or Project Engineer; coordinating subcontract-fabrication projects. Demonstrated experience in creating fabrication drawing packages and the application of GD&T principles.
Contract & Project Management:
Demonstrated experience in generating technical evaluation criteria for competitive procurements and evaluation of proposal packages. Demonstrated experience in coordinating, tracking, and processing subcontractor Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals, Nonconformance Reports (NCRs), and Technical Change documents.
Education/Experience Manufacturing Project Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accreditted institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Focus on Mechanical and/or Materials Engineering degree is preferred as well as a Project Management Institute certification preferred for this level.
Education/Experience Manufacturing Project Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Focus on Mechanical and/or Materials Engineering degree is preferred as well as a Project Management Institute certification is desired for this level.
Set up and execute dynamic experiments.
Operate under Devise Safety Analysis and Technical Surveillance Requirements
Proficient in 3D solid modeling programs used for mechanical/machine design
Perform Finite Element and Tolerance Stack-Up Analyses
Interface with internal LANL and external machine shops
Precision assembly experience; establish assembly procedures, fastener torque requirements, and component class fits.
