Los Alamos National Laboratory Materials Science Postdoc - Material Modeling in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The MST-8 Materials Science and Technology group at Los Alamos National Laboratory has great opportunities for outstanding candidates to join our team in the field of materials modeling, particularly meso-scale modeling of plasticity and damage of heterogenous crystalline metals. The successful candidate will lead the development of a phase-field model to predict the activation of twinning in metals with hexagonal close packed crystal structure.
The successful candidate will join the ‘Dynamic and Quasi-static loading – modeling (DQSLM)’ team within the MST-8 group. The DQSLM team focuses on the development and use of advanced computational mechanics models to predict the effects of extreme and complex environments on both mechanical response and microstructure evolution in materials. The environments considered include high stresses, temperatures, dynamics loading, radiation, etc. The DQSLM team adopts both hierarchical and integrated multiscale modeling and characterization strategies for mechanical deformation problems in the Material Science and Technology division. As such, a strong emphasis is placed in proposing original and statistically meaningful coarse graining approaches linking the findings that can be derived from the subatomic length scale to both length and time scales representative of components.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
A PhD in Materials Science, Mechanics, Physics or related fields completed within the last FOUR years.
Experience in modeling and simulations of crystalline materials. Expertise in the PHASE-FIELD modeling is required.
Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research.
Ability to meet the tight schedules, organize and prioritize tasks for effective accomplishment of project goals.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.
Strong publication record.
Good understanding of crystallography and microstructure evolution.
Expertise in modeling of dislocation and twinning mediated plasticity.
Ability to effectively program using common languages like Fortran, C++.
Ability to adapt to new requirements for projects and be flexible enough to learn new tools as needed by the research.
Education: PhD in Materials Science, Mechanics, Physics and related fields completed within last FOUR years.
