Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Design Engineer (Engineer 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Contribute to a dynamic team of design professionals providing engineering solutions across a wide variety of buildings at one of the most important research facilities in the world. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic mechanical engineer with an interest in designing mechanical buildings systems and infrastructure. You will be responsible for some of the following:
Develop Contract Documents consisting of drawings and specifications to define mechanical buildings systems such as HVAC air and hydronic systems, steam and condensate systems and plumbing systems. Incorporate applicable design requirements including nuclear safety requirements.
Create complete or partial mechanical buildings systems designs.
Perform engineering calculations for things such as heat gain, heat loss, and energy transfer, pressure losses in air duct or hydronic piping.
Perform work in accordance with the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) and applicable Federal, State, and Laboratory codes and standards.
Work with a team of engineers responsible primarily for LANL facility design.
Assist the Project teams with application of engineering and technical standards and practices.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC and plumbing buildings systems.
Demonstrated knowledge of engineering work planning and design coordination.
Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, design guides, codes and standards.
Knowledge of engineering systems, calculations, and applications of engineering methods.
Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
Training/Certifications: Engineer in Training Certificate highly desirable
Education/Experience: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
Knowledge of DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance.
Knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards and LANL Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
Knowledge of building automation for HVAC systems.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
