Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Engineering Post Master's Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Advanced Nuclear Technology Group (NEN‐2) conducts research, development, training and operations in the application of passive and active nuclear measurement techniques, as well as radiography. Applications of primary interest to the group include weapons of mass destruction, emergency response programs, intelligence support activities, and international treaty verification. NEN‐2 also conducts nuclear criticality research supporting basic research in nuclear chain‐reacting systems and contributing to arms control and treaty verification, waste assay, safeguards and accountability, and environmental restoration. A key component of the NEN‐2 mission is to teach a wide variety of personnel how to safely handle, detect, characterize, and manage nuclear materials. NEN‐2 staff members conduct classes in criticality safety, nuclear materials handling methods, and nuclear instrumentation. NEN critical thinking approach ‐ improving collaboration and safety culture/questioning attitude. NEN‐2 works closely with NCERC Facility Operations (NCERC‐FO) and Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) to execute unique nuclear critical and subcritical experiments. NEN‐2 likewise works closely with the Nuclear Criticality Safety Division.
The successful Post Masters Student candidate will perform the following duties in this position:
Implement the engineering design process to R&D applications
Develop CAD models for prototypical experiment hardware
Prepare detail, assembly, schematic, and installation type 2D drawings in accordance with LANL standards
Perform thermal, structural, mechanical, electromagnetic, and neutronic analyses for experiment designs
Assist staff with creating, testing, and installing prototypical hardware and software
Present R&D results to peers via internal, conference, or journal papers
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Mechanical Design
Knowledge and experience developing design solutions for mechanical hardware using commercial software (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion 360)
Demonstrated experience creating engineering drawings
Engineering Analysis
Experience using multiphysics software (e.g. ANSYS, COMSOL) and the ability to verify the results using hand calculations
Familiarity with deterministic and Monte Carlo neutron/gamma transport codes and methods
Instrumentation
- Familiarity with operating instrumentation and/or data acquisition systems for measuring temperature, pressure, strain, and/or vibration
Communication
Ability to schedule, execute, and meet milestones
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Demonstrated experience planning and executing research projects
Clearance
- Ability to obtain Q Clearance.

Education/Experience : Master of Science or Master of Engineering in Mechanical, Materials, Electrical, or Nuclear Engineering at time of hire or within the last three years with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
