Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Field Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Field Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations (J-2) Group is looking for a Mechanical Field Engineer 1/2 to support the mission of Stockpile Stewardship for the HSEES Programs (hydrodynamic and subcritical experiments). This position will be responsible for ensuring vessel interface between the hydrodynamic test device and the confinement vessel used for execution of tests. This interfacing entails vessel shielding to ensure longevity of the 6’ vessel, collaboration with assembly and system engineers, design and engineering of device specific hardware and diagnostics, interfacing with machine shops for fabrication and leading the fielding of the experiment to ensure data is collected in accordance with requirements. The selected individual will be expected to collaborate with a variety of engineers, technicians, drafters/designers and craft personnel to perform their job functions.

The Mechanical Field Engineer 1/2 will be stationed in New Mexico and perform activities in support of the Hydrodynamic Testing Program. This position may require occasional travel and requires candidates to receive and maintain a Q-Clearance.

Mechanical Field Engineer 1 ($85,400-$139,600)

As a Field Engineer 1, you will work with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on projects and programs for both internal and external customers. You will assist on the design and development of confinement vessel configurations to support execution of dynamic high explosive related experiments for the LANL Weapons program as well as other national security customers. Your responsibilities will include interfacing and integrating with various design and operational team members within J-2 and other groups at LANL, LLNL, and MSTS, as well as participation in fabrications and assemblies, and supporting the execution team at the various firing sites.

Mechanical Field Engineer 2 ($94,100-$155,700)

As a Field Engineer, you will be expected to perform all the duties of an Field Engineer 1. Additionally, you will be expected to develop solutions to complex problems, oversee, and communicate expertise in vessel configuration projects with customers, develop and implement technical approaches to meet test needs and well as lead the test execution of vessel configurations at the various firing sites .

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering: Knowledgein the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, including design, planning, fabrication, and development of execution test plans.

Design: Working knowledge in design drafting practices, geometric tolerance, and development of engineering specifications. CAD experience with design packages such as CREO or Solid Works

Field Operations: Working experience in supporting execution of R&D test plan, including experience in part fabrication and assembly to meet test requirements.

Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and present technical issues, both verbally and in written form.

In addition to the Mechanical Field Engineer 1 requirements, the Mechanical Field Engineer 2 must have the following:

Engineering: Demonstrated experience in mechanical engineering that supports R&D development of projects; including design, planning, analysis reports, fabrications, and testing of statically or dynamically loaded structures, systems, and components.

Design : Demonstrated experience in design drafting practices, to include ASME Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance stack. Experience performing Finite Element analysis (FEA) and report writing.

Field Experience/Project Management: Experience designing and authoring test plans, requirements and leading field operations for test execution. Includes demonstrated experience in data acquisition systems, managing contracts with fabrication shops and vendors to source materials and components. Experience developing and working towards project schedules and deliverables.

Engineering Specifications: Demonstrated experience supporting the development of engineering specifications (such as, design specification, fabrication and inspection specifications, assembly specifications, test plans, etc.).

Quality Standards: Working knowledge of the LANL Quality Assurance program and Conduct of Engineering.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with high explosives operations and knowledge of Nuclear Weapon Design and or production process

  • Experience with Critical Lift Plans and OSHA Standards for Hoisting and Rigging

  • Experience with Diagnostic fielding and data collection with systems such as thermocouples and strain gauges

  • Experience with the design, fabrication, and assembly of complex systems

  • Experience with CREO or Solidworks and use of product data management systems

Mechanical Field Engineer 1 Education/Experience :Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Focus on Mechanical and/or Structural Engineering is preferred.

Mechanical Field Engineer 2 Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Focus on Mechanical and/or Structural Engineering preferred.
