What You Will Do
We are seeking a Mechanical Procurements Specialist to join our collaborative and dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be highly-motivated, results-oriented, and a proficient multi-tasker. As a member of the Space Instrument Realization Group, ISR-5, you will have a critical role in supporting all of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) division’s many science and national security missions. This position is a highly respected and fast-paced job, which will require communication at all levels within the technical division at LANL, and with 3rd party vendors. The primary role of the Mechanical Procurement Specialist is to coordinate parts purchasing and quality assurance for mechanical components for a diverse array of final products. The Mechanical Procurement Specialist must be able to understand and interpret design packages for complex components, assemblies, facilities, equipment and/or systems. This person should have advanced knowledge of machining, and understand the processes for making components with differing levels of complexity, and how design changes may impact overall component functionality. The Mechanical Procurements Specialist will collaborate with LANL project leaders and external vendors on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing to ensure that requested components can meet the function, timeline, and available budget constraints for each project. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of engineering concepts and advanced skills in product data management, inventory management and/or configuration management of part and assembly definition. Finally, this person will serve as the subject matter expert on process or product improvement to ensure the availability of quality components as need to meet project milestones.
The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative ground, air and space-based measurement and detection systems for nearly 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We build, fly, operate, analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties, and develop innovative sensors, ground, airborne, and space hardware/software systems for basic scientific missions, nuclear nonproliferation, space situational awareness and remote sensing. In addition, we lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars Rovers, Van Allen Probes, and IBEX.
On any given day, you may be called to:
Provide detailed communication regarding parts production, design elements, and component deliveries to LANL project leaders, engineers and scientists, and internal machinists, as well as third party vendors.
Deliver status reports as needed to stakeholders.
Research and implement quality assurance practices.
Receive, verify and distribute components and materials, and update inventory documents/systems.
Read and interpret mechanical design documents, ensure compatibility with machining resources/capabilities, and recommend changes to facilitate production.
Maintain documentation for all mechanical parts orders, change requests, and final deliveries.

Demonstrated success working in a collaborative, team environment. Experience leading and working with a technical team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills; strong organizational skills.
Advanced knowledge of machining and production best practices. Working knowledge of quality assurance requirements. Self-directed in determining technical objectives/requirements for mechanical parts, ability to determine suitability of delivered parts without established procedures. Ability to advise engineers in design strategies. Mentor lower-level designers; provide drafting checks ahead of ordering. Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing best practices.
Ability to read and interpret project schedules and milestones as related to mechanical parts availability. Manage ordering and component deliveries in an organized and timely fashion. Established skills for multi-tasking, displaying initiative, and problem solving.
Working knowledge of procurement process and policies for government agencies. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple procurements in parallel, keep and track documentation related to procurement, and work in collaboration with procurement specialists.
Demonstrated record of commitment to safety, security, environment, and quality.

Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 7 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Expert knowledge of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical discipline. Subject matter expert providing practical solutions and perspective on product, process, and practice improvements.
Candidate should have a strong working knowledge of production, assembly, and testing techniques used to develop high reliability mechanical components.
Familiarity with Windchill and Creo Parametric configuration control and CAD software.
Demonstrated ability to work with team members to problem solve and identify solutions.
Working knowledge of LANL procurement process.
Active Q and/or SCI clearance.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
