What You Will Do

Work in the Space Instrument Realization (ISR-5) group of the Intelligence and Space Research Division (ISR) as a Mechanical Development and Fabrication Technician. The Space Instrument Realization Group (ISR-5) provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy high-quality, innovative measurement systems to space for national security applications and NASA missions. ISR-5 is composed of electrical and mechanical engineers, systems engineers, technicians, and project control specialists, all of whom engage on high performance project teams that span conceptual development to deployment.

The development, production, and delivery of national security payloads as well as one-of-a-kind NASA instruments requires a high degree of expertise and creativity. The successful candidate will serve as the lead mechanical technician engaged in the Electromagnetic Pulse instrument (EMP) fabrication, assembly and testing including implementation of fixtures and data acquisition systems, and formal reporting. Fabrication and testing activities require participation as a critical member of a highly functioning team environment with technicians, engineers, scientists, and project controls staff within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) as well as with Sandia National Laboratory (LANL) and other organizations. Test operations include set up of testing environments, and executing test objectives. Specific test environments include, but are not limited to, shock, vibration, load/deflection testing, vacuum and temperature environments.

  • Maintain required safety and security training, assure safety and security compliance, and make safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

  • Use and apply standard principles, theories, concepts, techniques and innovative approaches to perform work.

  • Adhere to mechanical fabrication policies, programs, procedures and practices.

  • Assist with technical research and gather data needed for engineering analysis.

  • Perform detailed review of drawings to ensure drafting/design accuracy, completeness, and format suitability. At Los Alamos, personnel in this position become experts in understanding and assessing usefulness and practicality of designs, as well as ease of implementation in the context of the overall system.

  • Apply knowledge of analytical and/or scientific software, computer-aided design (CAD) and/or CAD/CAM software and/or industrial control software within a relevant discipline.

  • Assist in product/system/equipment design, development and/or production processes. Prepare, review and document technical information, including test reports, anomaly reporting, and technical procedures.

  • Provide input for diagnosis of anomalies, failures or malfunctions, replace defective components, and perform basic troubleshooting using detailed drawings, manuals, and written instructions.
