Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Metal Spinning (Research Technologist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Deformation Processing Team is seeking a technician to join the team in support of a wide variety of metals forming projects. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively on both independent projects or as part of a team on various metal forming or heat treating tasks. The role will include hands-on work including deep drawing, forging, rolling, wire drawing & swaging, and heat treating of metal alloys. Previous hands-on experience in one of the above areas is strongly desired, but is not required.

Common tasks for this job include:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for metal forming, and developing and maintaining authorized documents to perform work safely and compliantly.

  • Programming and operation of a metal spinning, shear forming, and flow forming machine requiring advanced understanding of CNC control systems.

  • Lead project planning, and work tasks, and coordinate team activities to ensure project requirements and deliverables are met.

  • Develop and train new technicians and technologists in the areas of metal spinning and forming.

  • Routine maintenance and tooling changes on programmatic equipment such as metal spinning machines, rolling mills, deep drawing presses, and vacuum heat-treat furnaces.

  • Document and analyze data gathered during forming trials and operations, and report the results.

  • Hands-on work in a radiological controlled area.

Our Division is the focal point for metals research, processing development, and metallurgical applications at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Capabilities within the Deformation Processing Team include the use of rolling mills, hydraulic presses, vacuum heat treating furnaces, and laser powder bed metal additive manufacturing machines. We support a wide variety of programs with an emphasis on identifying creative solutions to meet our customer’s needs.

Many tasks involve hands-on work in a radiological controlled area that demands careful work practices and a strong safety culture. Technicians in the forming shop will work with several types of equipment, which requires a sense of ownership to maintain proper working order. New processes in the forming area will require the technician to be able to apply experience-based judgement to safely perform new jobs. Due to the nature of the work, maintaining conduct of operations and keeping a safe and secure workplace are essential while also meeting customer deliverables. Training will be required for LANL radiological work and conduct of operations regardless of prior experience.
