What You Will Do

The Nuclear and Particle Physics and Applications Group (P-3) of the Physics Division is seeking a Research Technologist 1 who will lead and/or support all the technical aspects of work conducted by the P-3 neutron team. The team conducts basic science research in nuclear physics using ultracold neutrons (very slow neutrons) to study various properties of the neutron. To support this research, the team operates a source of ultracold neutrons (one of the few operating in the world) based on solid deuterium at 5K. The team currently operates and develops several large-scale experiments, which involve helium cryogenics, high voltage, high vacuum, and/or precision magnetometry.

The P-3 Neutron Team leads many projects in the field of fundamental neutron physics. These include: development of the SNS nEDM experiment, development of a new nEDM experiment at LANL using the ultracold neutron (UCN) source, development of a new neutron lifetime experiment, and the Nab experiment at ORNL.

The position provides opportunities for you to grow as a technical expert as you gain experience. The successful candidate will perform the following functions:

  • Operate and maintain the helium liquefier facility.

  • Provide on-the-floor experimental support to experimental activities including construction and testing of a new liquid helium cryostat.

  • Work with vacuum, cryogenic (at 4K and superfluid), mechanical, and electrical systems.

  • Design, construct, and operate large superfluid helium systems.

  • Operate and maintain the cryogenic plant and ultracold neutron (UCN) source.
