What You Will Do_
The Advanced Engineering Analysis Group (W-13) strives to provide our customers with timely and accurate answers to complex engineering problems by creatively combining cutting-edge numerical tools. Our customers include the nuclear weapons program, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, among others. W-13 group expertise includes structural mechanics, structural dynamics, heat transfer, radiation transport, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, probabilistic methods, mechanics of materials, and numerical analysis.
We have a need for expertise in radiation transport, and are seeking a candidate at the R&D; Engineer 2 level to perform some or all of the following tasks:
Model and evaluate radiation environment effects using radiation transport tools such as MCNP and PARTISN in complex geometries
Work with finite element analysts to assess engineering and multi-physics problems
Participate in brainstorming sessions with customers and other analysts to determine technical approaches and schedule
Interact with test engineers to inform validation experiments
Write formal reports and deliver presentations that clearly and effectively communicate analysis conclusions and supporting information
Work independently as well as be part of a team
Participate in collaborations with DOE, DoD, and international laboratories
Travel several times a year
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Five or more years'experience with Monte Carlo radiation transport codes
Documented record of technical achievement in a relevant engineering discipline, such as mechanical, structural, civil, nuclear, or aerospace engineering
Experience with the development and/or application of computational engineering methods and tools, particularly in parallel computing environments
Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in technical reports and presentations
Experience meeting deliverable deadlines, both independently and as part of a team
Ability to perform analysis at an appropriate level for tasking ranging from hand calculations through complex modeling and simulation
Experience with unstructured mesh geometry in radiation transport codes such as MCNP
Experience with advanced variance reduction strategies in Monte Carlo codes
Experience with mesh generating tools such as Abaqus CAE or Cubit
Engineering experience at a DOE Laboratory, industry, or nuclear weapons enterprise
Experience with verification and/or validation of simulation results
Experience with statistical and/or probabilistic analysis
Experience leading interactions with customers or stakeholders
Experience with scripting and/or automated pre/post-processing
Active Q clearance or equivalent
Education: A minimum of a MS in Nuclear Engineering or Nuclear Physics from an Accreditation Board or Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program is required. A PhD in Nuclear Engineering or Nuclear Physics or a closely related discipline is strongly preferred.
Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Weapons System Engineering Division (W Division/W Program) provides system engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile. W Division is responsible for Program Leadership and engineering design and analysis in support of the national security mission at Los Alamos National Laboratory. W Division is integral in providing programmatic and technical leadership for evaluation and maintenance of the enduring nuclear weapon stockpile, stockpile assessment, certification, and design and deployment of life extension projects.
