Los Alamos National Laboratory Operational Readiness and Execution Electrical Engineering Post-Bachelor's Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Operational Readiness Implementation (ORI) Division invites applications for a post-baccalaureate position to support projects in the Safety Management & Engineering Team. Broadly, ORI provides the necessary business process and support functions to ensure Los Alamos National Laboratory, through the Associate Lab Director for Weapons Programs (ALDWP), successfully executes its mission assignments involving nuclear and explosive materials, science, technology, and weapons components. Some current projects include design, testing, and conduct of operations relative to nuclear material storage and glovebox safety. The postbac will be encouraged to explore other areas relevant to their interests. We will also encourage and support the postbac to explore their options in further graduate studies. This is a one-year appointment with a possible second year extension.

Projects of interest include the design and testing of nuclear materials containers and the use of tools from the field of robotics to ensure their safe storage. An interdisciplinary team will cooperatively mentor the selected candidate through the various technical areas entailed in this project.

The successful candidate will:

  • Expand their engineering toolbox

  • Learn relevant safety and security requirements

  • Work together with the experimental design team

  • Develop technical writing and communication skills

  • Share research at scientific conferences and assist with technical publications

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Education: recent bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field

  • A sense of curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to develop new skills

  • Ability to work well on a collaborative team

  • Good verbal and written interpersonal communication skills

  • Experience working in a professional environment, which may include work with an academic research team, government laboratory or in commercial industry.

  • Some travel will be encouraged for experiments and conferences

Desired Qualifications:

  • Programming and/or data analysis experience (Matlab, C++, Python, etc.)

  • Engineering design tool experience (AutoCAD, Solidworks, etc.)

  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, electronics, etc.)

  • A background in hardware design and testing
