Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations Manager 6 (Facility Operations Director) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an experienced leader to fill the role as the Institutional Facilities Operations Director (IF FOD). Reporting to the Operations Support Director in the Associate Laboratory Director of Facilities and Operations (ALDFO), this role is responsible for maintaining Institutional facility portfolio previously part of the Utilities and Institutional FOD. The IF FOD maintains and operates a large portion of the Laboratory’s facilities and all of the open space on site. As the IF FOD you will be responsible for managing and maintaining safe, secure, and compliant facilities and operations throughout the portfolio, including operations support while enabling efficient and effective mission execution. This position will partner with the programmatic customers to strengthen operations, improve safety culture, and increase operational formality by bringing the right expertise together to encourage organizational learning, better understanding the needs of stakeholders and customers, and enabling simultaneous excellence to better deliver on the national security mission.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Facility Operations:

5 years of demonstrated experience in operating large, complex facilities and operations including expert knowledge of Facilities Management including engineering, maintenance, safety basis, ESH&Q, operations support and project management. Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, integrating, and managing customer service organizations.

Risk Management:

Demonstrated successful experience identifying potential portfolio risks, developing risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and recommending risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of a program portfolio.

Work Planning and Control:

Demonstrated understanding and implementation of work planning and control including hazard identification, hazards analysis, and control implementation applying the hierarchy of controls for a wide range of complex, hazardous activities. Demonstrated ability to assign clear authority and accountability, and effectively implementing, directing, and managing change while maintaining efficient operations.

Line Management:

Demonstrated successful experience in providing leadership, supervision, and development of assigned employees including performance management, team building, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Strong leadership characteristics: personal integrity and accountability, fiduciary responsibility, commitment to teamwork, excellence in programs and operations, commitment to workforce diversity, and organizational improvement. Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills to include the preparation of reports/presentations.

Education/Experience : Position requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum ten years of related management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected. BS/MS degree in engineering, science, or related technical field highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Laboratory's organizational structure and programs, including conduct of maintenance, conduct of engineering, conduct of operations, quality assurance, and performance assurance systems.

  • Experience working in high hazard, highly regulated work environments, including explosives, nuclear, and accelerator facilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate with customers, stakeholders, regulators, and management regarding matters of significance to the organization.

  • Knowledge of and working familiarity with facility operations including: safety basis, criticality safety, waste management, radiography, and regulatory compliance issues.

  • Exceptional ability to identify problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining action to be performed on problems affecting operations management.

  • Exceptional ability to gain cooperation of others, conduct presentations of technical and/or function-specific information concerning specific projects or schedules, and preparation and presentation of oral and written reports.

  • Active Q Clearance

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
