Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations Specialist 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Operations Specialist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Science and Technology Operations (STO) Facility Operations Directorate (FOD) has an excellent opportunity for an Operations Specialist 3-4 depending on their experience. It is the responsibility of the FOD to ensure that the facilities are operated and maintained in a safe and secure manner and in a ready state for mission execution. The FOD provides organizational leadership for Facility Maintenance, Operations, Environmental Safety and Health (DESH), Quality, Waste Services, Project Management and Engineering.

This position, Operations Specialist, provides support to the assigned Operations Manager as a member of STO-FOD.

The successful candidate is expected to assist the STO Operations Manager (OM) with safety basis, policy implementation, projects and maintenance while working as part of a collaborative team. Duties include serving as an interface between the tenant organizations, support, construction and maintenance services to ensure organizational goals and mission milestones are being met within desired time frames. This position also provides general direction, guidance, data analysis, and/or operational support to ensure the implementation and integration of operational and programmatic functions on a daily basis. This position will also require documentation of facility systems to include how the system operates, start up, shut down and how it interfaces with other facility equipment.

Operations Specialist 3 ($73,800 - $120,400)

The successful candidate will:

  • Support facility related assessments

  • Labeling facility equipment and update MEL

  • Support Engineering in developing preventive maintenance

  • Support new activity reviews

  • Perform independent facility walkdowns

  • Provide editorial assistance in the development of work release presentations and training

Operations Specialist 4 ($89,900 - $148,300)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Operations Specialist 4 will be required to:

  • Lead facility related assessments

  • Independently develop and write slide for training and work release presentations

  • Develop, lead and execute work in accordance with schedules

  • Provide mentorship for all facility staff to include Operations, ESH, Engineering, Maintenance

  • Working independently in a variety of areas as determined by Operational Management

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Significant knowledge and experience with facility operations.

  • Advanced knowledge of the Laboratory's facility operations policies, practices, and procedures, and can apply them to resolve issues.

  • Experience successfully managing and controlling projects and associated budget/schedules.

  • Experience with Conduct of Operations, and Conduct of Maintenance.

  • Ability to self-supervise and work under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets

  • Demonstrated experience in developing alternative solutions for problems affecting facility operations and implementation in creative ways for complex problems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications

  • Exceptional customer service, organizational skills and the ability to interact with all levels of personnel both inside and outside the Laboratory

Additional Job Requirements for Operations Specialist 4:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Operations Specialist 4 level requires:

  • Extensive broad knowledge and experience with facility operations.

  • Extensive knowledge of the Laboratory's facility operations policies, practices, and procedures, and can apply them to resolve issues.

  • Experience with Conduct of Operations and Conduct of Maintenance.

  • Demonstrated ability to self-supervise and work under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and a leader of a team, including proven ability to contribute to team efforts and accomplish team objectives.

Desired Skills

  • Experience working within formal change control and configuration management processes. This includes the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and the Master Equipment List (MEL).

  • Experience in P6 scheduling and small project management.

  • Facility access control systems and data basis.

  • Experience with Conduct of Engineering.

  • A track record of solving and closing issues management actions.

  • The ability to become a Deployed Purchasing Representative (DPR).

Operations Specialist 3 Education Required: Typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Operations Specialist 4 Education Required: Typically requires a bachelor’s degree is desirable for the Operations Specialist 4 with 10-12 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
