What You Will Do

The Accountant 1 is a payroll position that supports the Oracle payroll functional team. This position reports directly to the Oracle Payroll Team Leader, receiving functional and operational direction from the designated supervisor/manager or his/her designee(s). The work includes a wide variety of payroll processing activities, including time entry tracking, entry or validation of payroll related forms, wage orders, manual earnings and deductions, and review of biweekly payroll results and control reports prior to disbursement of funds. Responsibilities also include termination processing, customer service coverage via email or the payroll call center for both payroll and time and labor module inquires. Other duties may include maintaining related records, filing, preparing accounting transactions and documents, documenting and updating procedures, and special projects. The ability to understand, apply and explain HR and CFO Laboratory policies is a key skill for this position.This position requires a proven record of excellent attendance and availability to periodically work outside of the normal work week.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated recent experience and success in a payroll function.

  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodology of the payroll profession, as well as payroll experience. Must understand pay components such as explaining Gross to Net calculation to an employee.

  • Knowledge and experience with state, federal and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations, as well as year-end payroll reporting requirements.

  • Knowledge of payroll activities and functions regulated by federal and state laws, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS).

  • Ability to apply and uphold Laboratory policies as they apply to payroll and time charging practices.

  • Experience with Oracle Payroll and Oracle Time and Labor or other payroll/time capture system(s).

  • Ability to work continuously and accurately with figures; perform arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division; accurately compare and transcribe figures with attention to detail, under strict deadlines.

  • Demonstrated awareness of importance of confidentiality and requirements surrounding personally identifiable information (PII).

  • Proficient with various computer software programs such as Microsoft Office and E-mail; must have demonstrated working knowledge in Word and Excel.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively both in a team environment and individually.

Desired Skills (skills that are nice to have, but not necessary) :

  • Certified Payroll Professional a plus.

  • Experience using Oracle Enterprise software in support of payroll operations a plus.

Education Required: Bachelor's degree in related business field and a minimum of two years of recent relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The Payroll & Benefits (CFO-PRBEN) organization is responsible in part for processing and distributing salary and wage payments to LANL staff, craft, and student employees. The Oracle payroll team within this organization is responsible for a bi-weekly payroll of approximately $30M. In addition to processing payroll for approximately 10,000 employees the team handles entry, tax and deduction reporting and disbursement of third party wage order payments. The team also handles the customer service function for all employees via email, phone and walk in traffic for both payroll and time and labor related inquires. The team works closely with human resources and partners with the CFO benefit accounting team.
