Los Alamos National Laboratory Physics and Chemistry of Materials Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Physics and Chemistry of Materials group (T-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking qualified applicants for a postdoctoral position opening on “ Understanding the Growth Kinetics and Resulting Microstructure in Energetic Materials ”. The successful candidate will be expected to perform outstanding research to understand and predict the growth of organic crystals, using electronic-level atomistic simulations to build a kinetic model of crystal growth incorporating the effects of temperature, solvent and impurities. The multiscale project is critical to help understand and predict the morphology of energetic crystals, which directly impacts their properties and performance. The research involves multiple areas of physics, chemistry, and materials science, and provides the opportunities to collaborate with experimental groups at LANL, who will grow crystals under prescribed conditions to confirm the modeling predictions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated expertise in electronic structure theory and atomistic simulations of materials

  • Demonstrated expertise in classical, semi-classical, or quantum molecular dynamics

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting original scientific research through peer reviewed publication record.

  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).

Education/Experience :A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in the modelling of organic materials and high explosives in particular, surface physics, and diffusive events, nudged elastic band calculations.

  • Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC).

  • Experience using the simulation software LAMMPS or related codes.

  • Experience with Kinetic Monte Carlo models

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact with people with a variety of expertise.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
