Los Alamos National Laboratory Plutonium Machinist (Special Machinist 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Special Materials Machinist 3/Special Materials Machinist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Pit Machining Group, PT-2, is seeking individuals who are interested in providing operational support for daily machining operations of special nuclear materials (SNM) at TA-55. The primary function is to fabricate components that support programmatic activities in support of national defense. Typical customer products range from rapid prototypes for research and development, to weapon-related components. Materials include both special nuclear materials as well as standard engineering materials. This position will report to the First Line Manager (FLM) for Machining Operations. The successful candidates will interface with various customers across Weapons Production, LANL and external organizations, and will be expected to:

TA-55 specific duties include: Providing machining support on actinide materials i.e., plutonium (Pu) in a Pu facility. Most of the machining occurs inside engineered safety glove boxes. Typical customer product ranges from rapid prototype for research and development, to ML1/ML2 product to weapon related components made from actinide and non-actinide materials. Customer base is comprised of internal and external organizations, including: Pu Sustainment/Pit Manufacturing; Pit Surveillance, and Dynamic Pu Experiments.

Special Materials Machinist 3 ($64,400 - $102,300)

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide mid-level CNC-machining support for the fabrication of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) components at TA-55 across multiple national security programs.

  • Provide input to manufacturing process improvement including: equipment selection, order of operations, fixture design, tooling optimization, NC programming, and in-process measurement.

  • Participate in lean projects to improve workstation layout and process optimization.

  • Acquire and maintain certifications/qualifications including: Glovebox Worker 2, Fissile Material Handler (FMH), PF-4 Machining Operator, PF-3 Cold Shop Machining Operator, and various machine specific OJTs.

Special Materials Machinist 4 ($77,300- $126,000)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:

  • Provide expert-level CNC-machining support for the fabrication of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) components at TA-55 across multiple national security programs.

  • Provide leadership for lean projects to improve workstation layout and process optimization.

  • Oversee adjustment of machining process parameters to ensure finished product quality.

Knowledge and Expertise:

  • Knowledge of writing, reading, and editing G-code

  • Experience and demonstrated ability to program, setup and run a variety of CNC machines in prototype or production environments.

  • Foundational understanding of GD&T principles

Scope of Work:

  • Ability to interpret and understand technical requirements contained in blueprints, CAD models, work instructions, and process travelers.

  • Extensive knowledge of metalworking theory and applied materials science.

Computer Proficiency: Basic computer skills including use of operating systems and machine controllers.

Communication: Demonstrated effectiveness in communication and teaming with peers, customers, and technicians as appropriate to achieve work requirements.

Additional Job Requirements for Special Materials Machinist 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Knowledge and Expertise:

  • Extensive knowledge of writing, reading, and editing G-code

  • Expert knowledge of GD&T Principles

Scope of Work:

  • Expert knowledge of metalworking theory and applied materials science.

Decision Making and Problem Solving:

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and solve complex problems within the framework of a diverse team.

  • Experience participating in process capability and/or continuous improvement studies

  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of component design

Education/Experience at Special Materials Machinist 3:

  • Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent AND

  • Accredited journey-person qualification OR program-qualified equivalency consisting of 10 years of experience in any machine trade discipline with 4-6 years of this experience in an area of scientific or engineering technology.

  • Certificate or associates degree preferred.

Education/Experience at Special Materials Machinist 4:

  • Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent AND

  • Accredited journey-person qualification OR program-qualified equivalency consisting of 15 years of experience in any machine trade discipline, with 5-8 years of this experience to include both manual and CNC set up and operation. Must have at least 2 years in a prototype fabrication environment.

  • Certificate or associates degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a nuclear facility.

  • Familiarity with Aerotech, FANUC, Siemens, and HAAS machine controllers.

  • Ability to program parts using CAD/CAM software (Creo Manufacture or Mastercam).

  • Demonstrated experience performing precision measurements to adjust process parameters and ensure finished part quality.

  • Ability to program and perform in process measurements using probing routines.

  • Experience performing machine tool setup and calibration (Laser alignment and BallBar test equipment).

  • Understanding of computer programming languages, python, C++, etc.

  • DOE Q clearance (or equivalent).
