What You Will Do

The Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division leads the LANL Global Security mission in:

  • Detecting and preventing the development or use of nuclear weapons and improvised nuclear devices.

  • Reducing and limiting nuclear arms and the spread of nuclear and radioactive materials, technology, and expertise.

  • Providing the capability and conducting critical, subcritical, and fundamental physics measurements to develop and maintain the Nation’s Nuclear Safety and Security Expertise.

  • Conducting research and development that supports the nation’s energy security.

NEN-3, International Threat Reduction applies expertise in nuclear and radiological material and commodities detection, packaging, capacity building, modeling and simulation to reduce nuclear proliferation and enhance global security in a changing threat environment.

Work in NEN-3 includes the research, development, and implementation of novel technology and solutions to identify, monitor, track and recover nuclear and radiological materials related to the Global Security mission. The successful candidate will become a member of NEN-3 and be assigned to the Nonproliferation Software Development and Project Support Team. This team applies software engineering, data management, 3D modeling/simulation and virtual reality environments to create innovative software solutions. Work in this area focuses on systems that model nuclear/radiological facility process flows; simulate nuclear/radiological worker actions and operations; track nuclear/radiological material storage, movement, and use; enhance treaty verification capabilities; and other applications directly related to nuclear security and safeguards. In addition, as a contributing member of a team, the candidate will help refine team objectives and work with other team members in scheduling commitments and resources.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Experience in:

  • Software application and algorithm development using common modern programming languages and methodologies.

  • Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

  • 3D modeling, animation, and environment design and development leveraging gaming engine technology

  • 2D and 3D graphics development.

  • Software Engineering and Database Management Principles.

  • Debugging, trouble-shooting, and diagnosing software problems.

  • Scientific system and application development.

  • Working collaboratively and building relationships in teams.

  • Technical writing and presentations.

Education/Experience : Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent science/engineering degree. Eligibility limited to students who have completed a bachelor's degree within the past 3 years, but have not been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program. The bachelor's degree should have been completed with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience In:

  • Developing software applications related to nuclear facility operations, material tracking, and/or inventories.

  • Developing applications for radiation detector integration and interfaces.

  • Software Quality Assurance for safety related software application development.

  • Nuclear facilities and materials related operations.

  • Requirements gathering and documentation for nuclear engineering or nonproliferation related projects.

  • Active Q Clearance.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
