Los Alamos National Laboratory Post Bachelor Student - Engineering Technologist (Mechanical) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an exceptional Post Baccalaureate Student to join our Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Group. The Post Baccalaureate Student will report to the Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Group leadership team within the Engineering Technology and Design Division. The Group partners with programs and innovators to deliver a diverse and unique set of applied and R&D mechanical and thermal engineering solutions for the nation’s scientific and security challenges.

The successful candidate will perform the following duties in this position:

  • Support one or more of the following program areas: Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), science, weapons and global security.

  • Use mechanical engineering principles and methods to solve an assortment of complex design problems.

  • Use Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to capture complex mechanical engineering designs.

  • Assist staff in the Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Group with designing, building, and testing optimized mechanical hardware for our customers.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Mechanical Design

  • Basic knowledge of how to develop design solutions for mechanical hardware.

Mechanical Design Definition

  • Basic knowledge of and experience with mechanical design definition using SolidWorks and/or Creo as well as GD&T principles.

Fabrication Technology

  • Basic knowledge of industry standard fabrication techniques for mechanical hardware.


  • Familiarity with operating instrumentation and/or data acquisition systems for measuring temperature, pressure, strain, and/or vibration.


  • Requires a recent (within the last three years) Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology (Mechanical Focus), with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Desired Qualifications:

GD&T Certification

Current certification as an ASME GD&T professional at the Technologist Level.

Additive Manufacturing

Experience with designing for additive manufacturing and using additive manufacturing technology.

Inspection Technology

Experience with material inspection technology such as coordinate measuring machines and laser scanners.
