Los Alamos National Laboratory Powder Materials Processing Technician / Research Tec 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Sigma Complex is a unique prototyping and fabrication facility that specializes in providing material, components, and manufacturing science to the Los Alamos experimental programs. The experimental mission spans the US nuclear weapons program, DOD, work with universities, Intelligence Agencies and many other customers. As part of this mission, Sigma Division works with a broad range of materials from stainless steel and aluminum, to special metals such as ceramics, uranium and beryllium.

What You Need

The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Powder Materials Processing team in the Sigma Division, reporting to the Powder Materials Processing Team Leader. Our team works in diverse areas including powder analysis, powder synthesis, powder handling, and powder consolidation of a wide variety of materials. Once trained, the successful candidate will be able to work independently, develop analytical methods, keep records in laboratory notebooks, communicate effectively, and assist in reviewing documents essential for the operation of the facility. Performance of job responsibilities will involve exposure to hazards that include radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, acids/bases, organic solvents and other hazardous materials. Job duties may include operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of glove boxes and analytical instruments such as particle size analyzers, thermal gravimetric analyzers, and gas pycnometers. The position requires a team player with an excellent work ethic, high-level of initiative, and a commitment to safety, quality and documentation.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Candidate must have hands-on experience with general chemical laboratory techniques.

  • Experience with Windows based PC operation and standard software applications (Microsoft Office) including data manipulation, and use of databases.

  • Proven ability to meet tight schedules (time management), organize and prioritize tasks for effective accomplishment of project goals.

  • Applicant must perform assigned tasks thoroughly to completion with a high attention to details with limited supervision.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with technical and operations personnel.

  • Ability and willingness to follow safety and security procedures.

  • Promote a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

  • Ability to obtain Q‐clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with powder handling and processing including extrusion, slip casting, compaction, milling and powder synthesis (sol gel, co-precipitation, solid state, hydrothermal, etc.).

  • Experience installing and maintaining equipment.

  • Forklift or crane operations experience.

  • Experience with one or more analytical techniques such as Particle Size Analysis, Gas Pycnometry, TGA, DTA, DSC, BET, CHNOS, Immersion density or Tap density.

  • Experience working in a radiological or nuclear facility.

  • Active Q‐clearance.

Education/Experience: Position typically requires an associate’s degree in a relevant field and four-to-six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
