Los Alamos National Laboratory Professional Staff Assistant 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The G. T. Seaborg Institute of the National Security Education Center (NSEC) is seeking creative candidates for the position of a Professional Staff Administrator 2 (PSA2) to serve as a key point of contact for Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) G. T. Seaborg Institute. Focused on the disciplines of actinide science at LANL, The G.T Seaborg Institute is an interdisciplinary research and education center within NSEC. The selected candidate will demonstrate initiative, professionalism, creativity, flexibility and outstanding customer service skills. They must also be an excellent problem-solver, anticipating challenges or obstacles and resolving them with minimal supervision. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Serve as a key point of contact for the National Security Education Center (NSEC) Seaborg Institute; communicate professionalism with customers, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, administrators, scientists and managers.

  • Support internal and external institutional collaborations and university interactions through a variety of mechanisms including meetings, seminars, workshops, conferences, visitor and guest agreements, Joint Appointment arrangements, and interlaboratory and university subcontracts.

  • Ensure collaborations and interactions are a resource to satisfy institutional and federal requirements for travel, education and training, workshop and conference activities.

  • Research, compose, design and prepare non-routine correspondence, reports, presentations, metrics, and special projects; interact with technical staff and editors on scientific publications; and perform other administrative duties as needed.

  • Act as a resource in developing and in providing input on changes to policies, processes, procedures, and guidelines related to specialized functions, organizations and/or programs.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a high-pressure office requiring occasional extended work hours and offsite travel.

  • Actively contribute to a collaborative team environment; working closely with other professional staff and administrators through cross-training, coaching and mentoring methods.

  • Exercise discretion in confidential and sensitive matters.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Program Management Facilitation Background

We have a lot of information that needs to be collected, organized, tracked and disseminated for us to succeed. We work cross-organizationally with a variety of personnel, internally and externally, to complete projects. You will need to have experience developing and maintaining systems to track and convey information on multiple projects and tasks to a variety of audiences. A willingness to engage in the strategic planning of the Institute’s programs, structures and operational procedures will be needed to be successful.

Business Operations

We are looking for someone who can help us develop an excellent model for operating the Institute. You will be able to demonstrate knowledge in business operations across the Laboratory, or an equivalent institution, and the ability to recommend solutions to problems affecting business. Excellent and hands on experience with standard business applications such as Microsoft applications, Webex, G-Suite, SharePoint, Adobe applications, etc. Experience with budgets will be helpful.

Decision Making

We require someone who can work with limited oversight, taking appropriate initiative, and making decisions within defined boundaries to include making recommendations to Institute and office management based on policy interpretation. You will have experience in conducting research, analyzing problems, and successfully identifying and integrating creative ideas and solutions to enhance office productivity and efficiency to ensure customer satisfaction.

Communication and Event Management

The successful candidate will be expected to have experience in calendar and email management, organizing internal and external meetings and events with internal and external participants. In additional to excellent verbal and written communication skills, you will be responsible for content while ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.

Clearance Ability

Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which generally requires US citizenship.


Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Undergraduate coursework is typically expected at this level.

Desired Qualifications:

LANL Systems and Advanced Software Applications

Proficiency in multiple Laboratory-wide business systems (e.g., Oracle, Concur, Foreign Travel Systems, Visitor and Guest Agreements, Subcontracts and iProcurement, etc.); advanced knowledge of computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft applications, WebEx, G-Suite, SharePoint, Adobe applications, etc.).

Print and Digital Media Layout and Design

Experience with layout and page design software for print and digital media and desktop publishing and image and publication management is desired.


Active DOE Q clearance.
