Los Alamos National Laboratory Qualification Developer for Weapons Engineering Programmatic Customers (Operations Support Specialist 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Qualification Developer will bring innovative learning technology and methodology to ALDW’s programmatic community. Working in Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO), which supports the pursuit of outstanding science, you will collaborate with the Operations Support Program Manager to create the DOE-enterprise best-in-class qualification programs for Weapons Engineering programmatic organizations.

The position reports into WFO, which is charged with facilitating mission execution across a broad portfolio, which includes a Haz Cat II Nuclear Facility, an Accelerator Facility, High Explosives sites, Firing Sites, and Detonator Facilities. This is executed by providing innovative, value added, and customer-focused support in the areas of facilities and operations management. WFO strives to facilitate, simplify, and manage operational and facility requirements in the pursuit of outstanding science.

Technological Tools and Work Processes

A fundamental element of the qualification program is the alignment of work processes with the technology and tools available to LANL and the DOE. Recognition of opportunities for innovation, and the ability to apply that innovation is a must. This includes use of technology for simulated learning, online and digital learning platforms, and curriculum development such that workers have a visual and written path to move from new hire to independent worker in a complex and highly technical field. Attention to detail is critical for success.

Business Knowledge and Skills

Experience with researching, analyzing, critically evaluating, and developing training and tools that meet customer needs, rather than “checking boxes”. A recognition that being the subject matter expert does not always mean making it happen, but rather working to address the root need. Identifying necessary elements of the program, as well as elements that should be revised is key to evolving the training program.

Professionalism and Customer Service

Communication to internal customers, training staff, and external contract facilities is a continuously utilized skill. As such, clear and concise communication of diverse data sets, as well as a willingness to hear criticism and needs is critical. This skill must be maintained while managing multiple, complex, and overlapping tasks at once.

Cross-Organizational Collaboration

Explosives operations are conducted throughout the Laboratory, primarily through the divisions and programs within ALDW. Working experience with multiple organizations is necessary to support continued collaboration throughout the Laboratory.

Education

Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

UTrain/LMS Experience

The Laboratory uses a Success Factors Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS has been customized for LANL through the UTrain application. Experience with UTrain, or a similar LMS is desired.

Experience with P 781-1, Conduct of Training Manual

The Laboratory’s training requirements are defined through Laboratory Procedure 781-1 (P 781-1). The ability to follow and define P 781-1 requirements to customers is desired.

DOE experience

Experience with the Department of Energy, either at the Department itself, or with one of its contractors, is preferable.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
