Los Alamos National Laboratory R & D Project Director (Project-Program Director 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Come and join an innovative team conducting groundbreaking research in defense of our nation. The Accelerator Development Project Office (ADPO) is seeking an R&D Project Director to join our team to develop advanced flash radiography capability for the nation’s subcritical experiment programs. This role will sit in the Advanced Sources and Detectors (ASD-TECH) office and provide leadership in the mechanical engineering area, in particular accelerator systems design, development, and commissioning.

If you are selected for this position you can expect to:

  • Provide design critique of key accelerator systems both internally and in conjunction with our partners, LLNL, Sandia, and NNSS: injector, cathode, cells, magnets, electron transport, vacuum systems, target, alignment, pulsed power, and thermal management;

  • Oversee and document magnetic lattice issues with respect to beam transport engineering design;

  • Provide oversight of the day-day design engineering activities (including procuring, assembly, testing) with the LANL Scorpius design engineering team;

  • Interface with the Procurement Engineering team to ensure preparation and delivery of procurement packages;

  • Interface with Systems Engineering and Quality Control elements to ensure these practices are applied during all phases of the accelerator development life cycle

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Accelerator Design & Development

You will need to have extensive experience with accelerator system design and development to succeed in this role. In particular experience with key accelerator systems such as: injector, cathode, cells, magnets, electron transport, vacuum systems, target, alignment, pulsed power, and thermal management.

Leadership & Collaboration

This position requires you to have demonstrated experience leading a team and experience collaborating productively with other teams of technical experts.

Establishing Standards & Practices

Experience collecting stakeholder requirements and translating them into common design standards and practices across multiple teams will be critical in this role. Additionally, you will need to have experience generating documentation pertaining to design, procurement, testing and QA/QC.

Education/Experience : This position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics or a related field, and at least 10 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:


Experience working with outside contracting firms for specific design scope projects is a plus.


This team is expected to grow significantly in the future so experience with recruiting and hiring is considered desirable.
