Los Alamos National Laboratory Radiation Protection Manager 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Reporting to the RP-TA55 Group Leader, the Radiation Protection manager is responsible for the direct supervision of Health Physicists, Health Physics Field Coordinators, and Radiological Control Technicians to ensure regulatory compliance requirements are implemented while providing outstanding Radiation Protection (RP) customer service to meet programmatic missions and milestones. The RP manager is responsible for tactical execution; ensuring operational excellence; business excellence; mentoring, developing and qualifying staff; developing a teaming work environment; and delivering high quality customer service including maintaining effective relationships with principal investigators/customers to resolve complex problems. The team leader will be expected to spend time “out-on-the floor” observing work and looking for methods/systems to improve work control processes from both a compliance and efficiency standpoint. This position is an opportunity for a motivated, innovative and customer-focused manager to lead personnel with critical skill sets implement the RP program safely and compliantly at TA55 FOD and ALD Weapon Production facilities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with the management and development Radiological Protection activities and programs.

  • Demonstrated skill in leadership, supervision, and knowledge of human resources administration of assigned employees.

  • Thorough knowledge of interpreting and applying Radiation Protection programs, services, standards, regulations, or codes.

  • Proven record of leading an organization in strategic planning and program implementation to meet program milestones and deliverables.

  • Ensures employees are qualified, authorized, and work in a safe, secure, and compliant manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with customers and regulators.

  • Bachelor of Science in a related technical discipline and 4 years of nuclear experience (5 years total experience) or an equivalent combination of education and experience to meet DOE 426.2 requirements.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated applications of conduct and formality of operations.

  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists.

  • Knowledge of LANL management systems and requirements, including personnel, budgeting, procurement and ESH.

  • Hazard Category 2 Nuclear Facility experience.

  • D&D or new construction experience.

  • Actinide health physics experience.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds, and ability to wear respiratory/protective equipment.

Work Environment: Work at 7300-foot elevation in physically demanding environments near sources of ionizing radiation/contamination; indoors in radiological work areas.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
