What You Will Do

The Process Controls Team supports the Applied Engineering and Technology (AET) Division, within the Automation and Process Controls Group (AET-5) which is responsible for the design, development, and field support of data acquisition systems, electrical engineering, process control systems, machine control systems, and safety systems used for Pu Sustainment Programs as well as a variety of additional programs throughout the Laboratory. Principal responsibilities will be to provide electrical design engineering and support of control system hardware components and software controls for newly developed data acquisition and control systems. Some work will be conducted in a radiological area.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Design and upgrade Instrumentation and Control Systems for programmatic and production process lines.

  • Perform electrical analysis and calculations for signals and power for R&D; equipment.

  • Contribute to the development of new control systems and electrical design techniques to be implemented on new projects.

  • Provide technical guidance in control system design techniques to junior engineers and technicians.

  • Produce materials for technical reports, documents, presentations, and concept papers.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Advanced experience with commercial SCADA control system packages and PLCs such as Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and/or Modicon.

  • Advanced experience in the areas of design and implementing of control system hardware and field instruments such as thermocouples, valves, pumps, interlocks, flowmeters, furnaces, power supplies, and associated field wiring.

  • Advanced understanding of Conduct of Engineering principals, including developing requirements documents, acceptance test plans, and maintenance plans.

  • Advanced knowledge of Software Quality Assurance standards.

  • Successful track record of providing technical direction to technicians and junior engineers.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of NFPA 70 National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace.

  • Project management experience including schedule development, cost estimates, and project status.

  • Knowledge of legacy PLC systems such as Rockwell Automation PLC-5s.

  • Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, design guides, standards, and administrative practices as applied to DOE non-reactor nuclear facilities.

  • DOE Q Clearance.

Education Required:A minimum of a BS in electrical engineering from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program are required, an advanced degree in engineering is preferred.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
