What You Will Do_

The Strategic Projects and Engineering Division is seeking an experienced R&D; Engineer to serve as the day-to-day leader of the nuclear material container Safety Management Program (SMP) and to manage the establishment of a plutonium storage container design authority. The R&D; Engineer will work closely with the LANL Nuclear Materials Manager, container subject matter experts, and operating divisions within the Weapons Production Directorate. The R&D; Engineer will develop program requirements and documentation, coordinate assessments and reporting, and provide technical evaluation of nuclear material container issues.

The successful candidate will possess a broad background in engineering, including theoretical and practical knowledge of experimental design, the development of technical standards, and the design of nuclear material storage solutions, including containers. To be successful the candidate should possess a broad understanding of multiple engineering disciplines, as well as materials and nuclear science.

_Specific job requirements include but are not limited to:


  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge and experience in an engineering discipline that is closely related to nuclear material storage, specifically nuclear material containers.

  • Demonstrated experience with the acquisition of test data, including experiment design, data analysis, verification and validation, and reporting for engineering and technology solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting nuclear safety.

  • Demonstrated experience with the development and implementation of technical requirements and standards.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting with all levels of the organization, requiring excellent interpersonal skills such as training, communication, conflict resolution, negotiating, etc.

  • DOE Order 426.2 requires a BS, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience with the design and implementation of robotic engineering solutions.

  • Advanced knowledge of nuclear material container or storage science, engineering, or the testing and surveillance of containers or similar storage solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience in project development, reporting, and presentation to management and federal sponsors.

  • Q Clearance preferred.

Education and Experience:An advanced degree (mechanical, chemical or related engineering field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 10 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2:This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
