Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Come join our Flight Integration Engineering group, Q-19, where you will leverage your engineering knowledge to support aircraft flight line testing, ground- and submarine-based missile testing, and world-class ground testing operations, required to assure the unwavering ability to deliver the US nuclear deterrent. Your role in these activities will include integrating with federal representatives and operators from the Departments of Defense and Energy, industry weapon-delivery-vehicle designers, and international communities and collaborators, in the design and execution of flight tests.

Responsibilities associated with the design of flight tests will require executing the complete systems engineering process; from the development of concepts and customer needs statements, to requirements development, to design and iteration, to prototype and manufacture, assembly, delivery and installation of; flight test hardware, common and advanced sensors and sensor schemes, and other advanced technologies to improve flight testing – all of which will be developed using world class facilities, technologies, materials and systems, unique to the worlds original nuclear weapon design lab, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

When it comes to the support of test execution, you will be the on-site representative for LANL, responsible for the assurance of data acquisition – to include making go-no-go decisions thereby dictating the continuation of flight and launch – post-test data analysis, and the reporting of results to high-level federal representatives.

Along with fellow engineers, you will be engaging and collaborating regularly with personnel across multiple LANL organizations, as well as Sandia National Laboratories, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), production agencies throughout the NNSA nuclear security enterprise, and Department of Defense.

This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Experience

Experience in one or more of the following components of Engineering/System Engineering and Design; concept and need statement development; engineering requirements development, design integration, iteration and optimization; engineering qualification and certification; assembly/production; prototyping and prototyping technologies; inspection; testing; data collection and reduction; reporting; etc. Experience in one or more of the following disciplines; mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, systems engineering.

Communication

As a LANL representative interacting with high levels of federal leadership and operators across multiple agencies, candidates for this position will have demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills which includes the ability to interact effectively with all members of an engineering organization from; technologists, machinists, peers/colleagues, subject matter experts, senior leadership, management, internal and external customers, and the ability to resolve competing and prioritized requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience with personal and technical conflict resolution.

Project Facilitation

As a Research and Development Engineer 3, candidates will be expected to lead high level projects and mentor/usher in/develop future LANL engineers. This will require a demonstrated and proven ability to lead, meet and mentor younger staff in concert with meeting schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities. Demonstrated consultative record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the development of component and systems requirements and specifications for components and systems

  • Demonstrated technical leadership of small teams and/or developing technical strategies for organizations.

  • Experience with specifying and designing data acquisition and instrumentation

  • Familiarity with engineering modeling tools

  • Familiarity with engineering analysis

  • Experience with programming languages

  • Knowledge of Digital Engineering and Models Based System Engineering

  • Familiarity with Air Force and Navy flight & test programs

  • Understanding of NNSA and DOD qualification processes

  • Knowledge of nuclear weapon systems and delivery vehicles

  • Active Q clearance

Work Environment: Foreign/Domestic travel.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
