Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

The R & D Engineer 3 will report to the Process Automation and Control Group Leader within the Engineering Technology and Design Division (E). The group supports the Laboratory’s Plutonium (Pu) Research, Development, and Manufacturing mission. Primary responsibilities include the design, development, and field support of data acquisition systems, electrical engineering, process control systems, machine control systems, and safety systems used for Pu Sustainment Programs as well as a variety of additional programs throughout the Laboratory. Some work will be conducted in a radiological area.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Control Systems

Advanced knowledge of and experience in commercial SCADA Control Systems design, implementation, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance.

Field Instruments

Experience in the areas of design and implementing of control system hardware and field instruments such as thermocouples, valves, pumps, interlocks, flowmeters, furnaces, power supplies, and associated field wiring.

Electrical Engineering

Advanced knowledge of and experience contributing as a leader in the fundamentals of electrical engineering, including circuit design, modelling, and circuit simulation tools.


Demonstrated knowledge of safety issues or potential hazards relating to control systems and devices and the use of interlocks and design features to mitigate risks and hazards, including the demonstrated ability to define deliverable and/or lead projects related to safety. Knowledge of Software Quality Assurance standards.


Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel and customers, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring, coordinating/monitoring the work of others, and serving as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership.


Requires a Master’s of Science Degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)accredited engineering college or university program in Electrical Engineering and minimum of ten years related experience, or anequivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:


Knowledge of NFPA 70 National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace.

Legacy PLC systems

Working knowledge of legacy PLC systems such as Rockwell Automation PLC-5s.

Control Systems

Advanced knowledge of and experience in commercial SCADA Control Systems design, implementation, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix or CompactLogix or with National Instruments PXI or cRIO or cDAQ systems.

DOE Non-Reactor Nuclear Facility

Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, design guides, standards, and administrative practices as applied to DOE non-reactor nuclear facilities.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the one year of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.Please refer to Laboratory Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.
