What You Will Do

The Office of Seismic Hazards and Risk Mitigation (OSHRM) is a team that is focused on earthquake engineering and risk management for Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). We are part of the Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Group within the Engineering Technology and Design (E) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Our main work products include structural engineering calculations and reports. The Office supports the Long-Term Seismic Program (LTSP) at LANL. The LTSP undertakes geophysical studies of the Los Alamos environments to better understand the seismic hazard at the laboratory. The LTSP also funds analysis to understand the response of structures, systems and components to that ground motion and to ensure that the seismic performance of the safety functions is acceptable. We perform median centered seismic fragility analysis of systems and components to understand the seismic reliability of those systems and components. We frequently are asked to defend our analysis to the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB). Additionally, we are often engaged in designing engineering solutions to retrofit systems whose performance is found to be inadequate.

The successful candidate will:

  • Perform reliability analyses for existing safety class and safety significant systems that are credited with performing a seismic hazard mitigating function as determined by safety basis.

  • Perform a probabilistic nonlinear analysis of a significant nuclear facility in the time domain.

  • Reviewing existing analyses, updating nonlinear models, and recalculating the annual frequency of seismic induced failure of the facility.

  • Complete ABAQUS simulations on a high-performance cluster (HPC) at LANL.

  • Review existing fragility analyses to determine the critical engineering demand parameters of interest (e.g. inter-story drift in shear walls). These parameters will be extracted based on a number of non-linear ABAQUS simulations and distributions of the engineering parameters of interest and seismic fragilities will be updated considering the nonlinear response of the structure.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced experience in determining dynamic response and behavior of reinforced concrete structures, reinforced masonry structures, and braced steel frames

  • Advanced understanding of applying nonlinear seismic site responses to structures and systems

  • Demonstrated experience in running and interpreting nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis tools such as LSDYNA, Real ESSI, ABAQUS, DYNA-3D, or equivalent

  • Demonstrated experience with implementation of NNSA natural phenomena hazards standards (DOE-STD-1020, ASCE-4, ASCE-43, ANSI/ANS-2.26, ANSI/ANS-2.29)

  • Substantial publication evidence of high-quality written products (journals, conferences, reports, calculation-notes and test records)

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to work with coworkers with different technical backgrounds

  • Proficiency and experience in commitment to high quality and timeliness of deliverables

  • Ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written presentations

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced experience in higher level programming languages such as C++, JAVA, Python, Yacc, Lex

  • Qualified as a DOE EH 0545 Seismic Capability Engineer

  • Advanced experience in structural design of reinforced concrete or braced frame structures

  • Demonstrated background and experience in performing soil-structure interaction analysis in either the time domain, or frequency domain (SASSI)

  • Significant coursework or related experience in site response (nonlinear response of soils material)

  • Significant coursework or related experience in geotechnical engineering

  • Demonstrated experience in defending analytical results to regulatory officials (NRC, DNFSB)

Education Required:

  • Minimum BS degree in civil/structural/mechanical engineering (or related field) from and ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 10 years or more of relevant professional experience, or

  • MS degree in civil/structural/mechanical engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 5 years of relevant professional experience, or

  • PhD in civil/structural/mechanical engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 3 years of relevant professional experience.

Work Environment: Reading vision, distance vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range, sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs, typing or keyboarding.
