Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Product Engineer 3/Product Engineer 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Product Engineer 3 ($113,100 - $190,900)

As a Product Engineer 3 you will report to the Product Engineering First Line Manager in the PT-5 Product Engineering and Product Support group. You will direct the disassembly and analysis of pits in support of the national surveillance mission and support process engineers in the manufacture of new pits and plutonium products. Interfacing daily with the design agency, quality assurance organizations and program management will also be part of your daily job duties.

Product Engineer 4 ($135,800 - $235,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will report to the First Line Manager in the PT-5 Product Engineering and Product Support group and lead project teams for assigned programs. You will be the technical lead integrating various manufacturing, characterization, and testing processes applicable to pit surveillance and pit manufacturing in your area of expertise. This role will involve integration with other Design and Production agencies and sponsors across the nuclear security enterprise as well as with subject matter experts in Material Science, Chemistry and Nondestructive Evaluation.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Expertise: Knowledge and proven experience in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, quality engineering, or mechanical engineering. Should have also demonstrated experience in process variable/product quality relationships.

Project Management: Experience designing, planning, and executing manufacturing, scientific and development projects.

Production Planning: Demonstrated experience in manufacturing and quality documentation, e.g. preparing travelers or production plans, qualification of processes, preparing data packages, specification development and gap analysis etc.

Communication Skills: Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels (e.g. technicians, process owners, product/quality/design engineers, project managers, management, and federal sponsors).

Additional Job Requirements for Product Engineer 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Engineering Expertise: Advanced knowledge and proven experience in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, and/or Electrical Engineering with advanced knowledge and understanding of general weapons manufacturing.

Project Management: Extensive experience designing, planning, executing manufacturing and characterization projects and executing research and development projects and/or providing leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing new technical capabilities and leading technical decision-making. Advanced experience in preparing and reviewing engineering designs. Expertise in project development, reporting, and presentation to management and sponsors. Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels (e.g. technicians, process owners, product/quality/design engineers, project managers and other management)

Technical Skills: Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in manufacturing process development. Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience in materials characterization techniques, including metallography, SEM/EPMA, FTIR, Auger, XPS, etc. Vast knowledge of Analytical Chemistry Techniques and advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in metallurgical processing of actinides, especially plutonium and its alloys and compounds.

Production Planning: Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience in manufacturing and quality documentation, e.g. preparing travelers or production plans, specification development and gap analysis, qualification of processes, preparing data packages, etc.

Computer Proficiency: Advanced experience maintaining detailed records of work using standard computer software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.

Education/Experience at R&D Enginner 3

Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Education/Experience at higher level:

Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Weapons Quality requirements, e.g. NAP-401.1, DPBPS, etc.

  • Experience with configuration management principles and practices.

  • Experience in NNSA product realization processes.

  • Expertise and experience in systems engineering, statistical process control (SPC), and lean six sigma processes.

  • Expertise in project development, reporting, and presentation to management and sponsors.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in manufacturing process development.

  • Knowledge and experience in machining, welding or vacuum techniques.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):Lifting 30+ pounds, climbing stairs.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
