What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 4/5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Los Alamos National Laboratory leads a continuing series of space payloads for treaty verification related to nuclear explosions, as well as research instruments on NASA scientific missions. The Intelligence & Space Research (ISR) Division seeks an innovative, dynamic Chief Systems Engineerto lead a highly integrated systems engineering team working on a broad portfolio of national security and scientific space missions of high national impact. The selected candidate will:
R&D Engineer 4 ($119,700 - $201,700)
The successful candidate will:
Provide technical expertise and leadership in the development, implementation, and integration of systems engineering principles, practices, and processes throughout the Division;
lead a growing Systems Engineering Integration & Test Team, currently comprised of 11 technical staff working in Systems Engineering, Integration & Testing, Radiation Eﬀects, Reliability Assessment, and Environmental Testing,
Implement systems engineering and coordination activities to support the design, development, deployment, and operation of space payloads to ensure the system‐wide integration of mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems, through effective risk management that ensures reliability, maintainability, safety, security, and other program requirements.
Coordinate with line and program management to ensure the team is appropriately resourced and provides high quality, timely and technically independent support to projects and programs.
Support and influence, through senior-level guidance, a >$100M/yr portfolio of multidisciplinary programs related to the development and fielding of space-based systems;
Through mentoring and workforce development, lead and inspire the next generation of technical staff across the organization;
Lead technical peer review across Los Alamos space programs;
Actively engage in national and international technical communities, including participation in professional societies;
Work with Los Alamos program and project leadership to interface with internal and external stakeholders, partners, and customers to advance program objectives, identify and manage risk, and resolve issues related to systems engineering disciplines.

R&D Engineer 5 ($144,000 - $249,400). Additional job responsibilities of the R&D Engineer 5 include participation in program strategy for the future as well as external interactions with program sponsor and stakeholders:
Lead the planning, implementation, and insertion of new technologies and system approaches to meet evolving sponsor requirements and expectations.
Work with program and line leadership, as well as sponsors and customers, to define and implement Los Alamos strategy for new and evolving national programs; guide the development of long-term capabilities needed for these programs.
Participate in external peer review of technical systems, projects, programs, and capabilities of collaborating organizations
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience in the application of modern Systems Engineering principles and practices to solve complex technical problems.
Demonstrated experience with development, integration, and test of space-based, airborne, or similarly complex systems.
Demonstrated experience in identifying and managing risk for a project or program having a complex risk landscape.
Demonstrated expert knowledge of and experience in failure or root cause analysis.
Experience managing and leading a diverse team composed of a wide variety of technical skills.
Experience working across multidisciplinary, high performance teams toward a common goal.
Demonstrated track record of successfully mentoring junior staff.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI clearance.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 5:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 5 level requires:
Demonstrated ability to lead projects and research teams in broad, multidisciplinary areas of expertise while effectively collaborating with scientists and managers across Los Alamos as well as sponsors, customers, and collaborators.
Experience in managing and leading a project through a complex risk landscape that spans multiple organizations
Demonstrated experience leading the maturation of high risk, innovate technical solutions from inception to deployment on a space-based, airborne, or similarly complex system.
Systems engineering experience with satellite‐based sensor systems.
Experience performing mission, functional, and cost‐beneﬁt analysis.
Experience managing budget, scope, and schedule aspects of technical projects.
Experience integrating payloads onto spacecraft, as well as the associated command and control (ground) systems.
Experience with Model‐Based Systems Engineering concepts.
Active Q and/or SCI clearance.
Advanced degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering or related technical field.
R&D Engineer 4: 8+ years of directly related experience (or equivalent combination or education and experience).
R&D Engineer 5: 12+ years of experience (or equivalent combination or education and experience). Engineering degree from an ABET accredited university is desired.
Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
