Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Tec 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Shock and Detonation Physics Group (M-9) is looking for a hard working, organized, entry level person to fill a Research Tec 2 position. The Shock and Detonation Physics Group, M-9, is responsible for delivering precision data, advanced diagnostics, and high-fidelity models of shocked high explosives (HE), metals, and polymers for Weapons, Global Security, and other National Security needs.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting operations in a facility that contains multiple powder and gas gun systems including single-stage powder guns and two-stage gas guns. The team also conducts experiments at other facilities and firing sites at Los Alamos and at other laboratories. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting experimental efforts which includes gas/powder gun setup and cleaning, general maintenance, working with precision mechanical systems, and working with high-pressure systems.

  • Assisting with experiment fabrication including sample lapping and polishing, optical fiber polishing, assembling optical components, and general target assembly.

  • Maintaining accurate inventories which includes refurbishing components, purchasing, and general organization of hardware, components, and consumables.

  • Interacting positively with a team composed of scientists, technologist, technicians, and visitors.

  • Performing work in a safe and secure manner.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Willingness to work with high explosives, radiological materials, and large, complex mechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated mechanical skills.

  • Basic mathematical skills and experience with standard office software such as e-mail, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with technical and operations personnel.

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational and planning skills.

Education/Experience: Position requires a High School diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q Clearance, or the ability to obtain an Active DOE Q Clearance

  • Machining experience

  • Proficiency operating electronic recording equipment, such as oscilloscopes.

  • Crane and forklift operator experience

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
