What You Will Do

The Materials Development team is responsible for the design, fabrication, assembly, and characterization for national security needs. The Materials Development team in the Engineered Materials group (MST-7) is seeking outstanding candidates to perform a variety of materials synthesis and analytical tasks pertaining to next-generation polymers, ceramics, metals and composites for national security applications. The team undertakes a broad range of high-risk, high-reward projects based on additive manufacturing (3D Printing), self-assembly, and other novel materials synthesis approaches.

The successful candidate will both synthesize a variety of these materials in a laboratory setting and perform characterization experiments including microscopy and other physical measurements, chemical/thermal analysis and mechanical testing. The candidate is expected to work independently and be able to assist in developing new protocols related to scale-up and process development as these technologies evolve out of our R&D laboratories and into manufacturing settings. Regular dissemination of results in the form of internal reports, peer-reviewed research papers, patent applications and conference presentations will be essential for success.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to design comprehensive material testing plans using a variety of analytical techniques and organize results for broad communication with team members and project sponsors.

  • Ability to quickly learn and practice new laboratory synthesis and characterization methods in a safe and secure manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team possessing diverse technical expertise at a variety of skill levels.

  • A strong skillset encompassing organization, planning, and interpersonal communication.

Education/Experience: A bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline related to Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or Polymer Science is required. Advanced degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with materials synthesis and/or 3D Printing. (FDM, stereolithography, inkjet, or related technologies).

  • Knowledge of complex fluids (colloidal suspensions, gels, emulsions, etc.) and associated synthetic techniques.

  • Experience with materials characterization equipment and associated methods (SEM, TEM, EDS, FTIR, UV-Vis, NMR, BET, porosimetry, TGA, DSC etc.)

  • Active Q clearance.
