Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technician 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Isotope Program (IP) in C-IIAC produces and purifies radionuclides for medical and industrial applications as well as for fundamental research. We are looking for a Research Technician to be part of the team supporting operations and program maintenance activities in the Hot Cell (HC) Facility as part of the IP. The IP Hot Cell Facility is a laboratory designed to handle high dose rate radiological materials. It has hot cells equipped with telemanipulators to remotely handle high dose rate materials along with general laboratory space with specialized equipment to support isotope processing activities.

The Mechanical Research Technician is responsible for upkeep and programmatic maintenance of the hot cells and associated facility equipment. The work includes mechanical and electrical work for maintenance of the analytical and programmatic equipment within the general hot cell facility, maintenance of the hot cell train and telemanipulators, and interface with the facility personnel for building-wide systems. The successful candidate will develop and update technical and safety procedures, and support technical work for isotope production operations. The successful candidate must be able to work with radioactive materials and in radiologically contaminated areas, become respirator fit, and perform work with remote manipulators as part of a high performing team to meet deliverables for the IP.

The successful candidate will be required to…

  • Have a strong mechanical and/or electrical background

  • Serve as an IP mechanical technician to maintain and repair HC telemanipulators and other equipment associated with the program mission.

  • With consideration of ALARA, work in radiation areas with contaminated and activated items, including work requiring respiratory protection.

  • Develop and update technical procedures and documents.

  • Assist in fabricating, installing, maintaining, and repairing systems critical to the operation of the Isotope Production Facility.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment

  • Ability to learn to repair and maintain telemanipulators

  • Ability to learn safe and responsible handling of highly radioactive and hazardous materials including the use of manipulators for remote handling of materials in hot cells and wearing a respirator

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, update, and adhere to detailed technical and safety procedures, including producing and verifying records of work.

  • Ability to work as part of a team in the maintenance and upkeep of the facility.

  • Proven ability to meet deliverables in a fast paced and dynamic team environment.

  • Ability to work under a quality assurance program including current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP).

  • Ability to obtain a CDL license with HazMat endorsement, which requires passing a physical

  • Ability to operate cranes and forklifts.

  • Physically fit and able to handle a strenuous work environment (respirator work, heat stress, lifting/moving heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs.), up and down stairs, etc.).

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance which usually requires U.S. Citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a minimum of an Associates’ Degree in a related field and 5 years of related experience or relevant Military experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience performing radiological work in PPE (respirator etc.).

  • Experience with tele-manipulators.

  • Prior experience/education with basic radiochemical principles.

  • Experience operating cranes and forklifts

  • CDL Driver’s license with HAZMAT endorsement.

  • Active Q clearance

  • Experience with executing work within the LANL safety envelope

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .   • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
