Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Research Technologist will work as part of LANL’s Strongly Correlated Electron Materials team. The team aims to discover and understand new physics through new materials. The team consists of 7 research staff members and 10 postdocs with expertise in sample growth, transport and thermodynamics, device fabrication, measurements under extreme conditions (high pressure and low temperature), nuclear magnetic resonance, photoemission, and neutron scattering. The successful candidate will support one or more of these efforts. As such, the successful candidate will design, build, and modify state-of-the-art vacuum, cryogenic, and/or furnace equipment and be involved in data collection and/or analysis. The successful candidate will become an integral member of this renowned and highly successful LANL team and will make critical contributions to exciting scientific research.

Research Technologist 1 ($77,300 - $126,000)

  • Design, build, and test new equipment to develop new experimental capabilities including state-of-the-art vacuum, cryogenic, and/or furnace equipment

  • Work with staff members to develop, implement, and complete project objectives

  • Perform experiments and/or analyze data, with supervision from staff members

  • Support helium liquefaction operations, along with a technician

  • Work with vendors to maintain, troubleshoot and repair analytical instruments

  • Communicate results through internal reports, oral presentations, and/or technical publications

Research Technologist 2 ($85,400 - $139,600)

  • In addition to work outlined above, the Research Technologist 2 will:

  • Develop new analytical methods to achieve program objectives

  • Perform experiments and analyze data independently with consultative direction from staff members

  • Contribute ideas to new proposals and scientific directions

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with use of analytical equipment, especially cryogenic equipment

  • Demonstrated experience in machining, soldering/brazing, and vacuum techniques

  • Demonstrated understanding of analytical instrument troubleshooting and repair

  • Demonstrated experience in working independently as well as within a team environment

  • Demonstrated experience in meeting scheduled deliverables or milestones

  • Fluent in common software packages including Excel, Word, PowerPoint

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 2:

  • Work independently to develop, implement, and complete project objectives of moderately complex scope

  • Mentor other technicians

  • Manage safety and security tasks and duties for the team's activities

Education/Experience for Research Technologist 1: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or engineering technology from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for Research Technologist 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or engineering technology from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Master’s degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Fluent in design software packages such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD

  • Knowledge and experience of cryogenic, vacuum, furnace, and/or gas-handling systems

  • Knowledge and experience of trouble-shooting basic electric systems

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . No Clearance: This p osition does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
