Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Sigma Division is seeking highly motivated technologists to work with existing Machinists and Engineers/Scientists in the Division. The work will require the individual(s) to utilize their knowledge in machining methods and processes, component design, and mechanical inspection technology.

Machining Team: The Machining team employs several different manufacturing disciplines including Manufacturing and Process Engineers, Machinists, and Inspectors. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the reestablishment of the inspection capability at Sigma, assisting with CNC programming of machines, and assisting with component design for the Machining Team and Sigma Division as a whole. Tasks will include assisting with inspection processes and programs to meet the quality requirements for both production and experimental components, working with manufacturing process engineers to develop acceptance criteria of components, and making use of CAD and CAM software for component design and machine programming.

Research Technologist 1 ($77,300-$126,000)

  • Perform inspection measurements on complex parts to tight tolerances with various hand tools, measurement arms, and CMMs

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of concepts and techniques with minimal supervision to optimize/ensure capability, maintenance, and growth in inspection technology areas

  • Communicate results through internal reports, technical publications and/or progress reports

  • Assist in the design of components using CAD software such as SolidWorks and CREO

  • Use knowledge of machining processes to make CNC machine programs on CAM software such as MasterCam

  • Work with vendors to maintain, troubleshoot and repair inspection equipment in the facility

  • Maintain supplies for the equipment in these areas

  • Ensure that the work areas remain tidy

  • Complete hands-on work with radioactive and hazardous materials

  • Support installation, testing, and operation of new equipment, as well as the removal of legacy equipment

  • Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment

Research Technologist 2 ($85,400-$139,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will:

  • Use ability as a subject matter expert to develop techniques, and completes work in innovative and effective ways

  • Develop new principles and concepts

  • Assist in developing and maintaining authorizing documents to perform work safely

  • Work with vendors and LANL employees to maintain CAD and CAM software and troubleshoot issues that arise

  • Work alongside engineers developing acceptance criteria for complex components

  • May act as a lead in the area of CNC programming, working directly with machinists to ensure machine programs meet quality and safety requirements

  • May act as a lead in the areas of inspection reviewing activities to ensure work, components, and processes meet quality specifications and are completed to requirements

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in mechanical inspection areas acquired by experience, certification and/or formal education

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with use of equipment typically found in an inspection laboratory

  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with technical and operations personnel

  • Demonstrated ability in working independently as well as within a team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to meet scheduled deliverables or milestones

  • Fluent in common software packages including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Experience with drafting/CAD software such as SolidWorks and CREO

  • Experience with machining and its processes to make use of programming/CAM software such as MasterCam to assist in the programming of CNC machines

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship

Additional Job Requirements for Research technologist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles, mathematical formulas, computations and data gathering methods

  • Demonstrated experience programming and operating CMMs

  • Demonstrated experience using inspection software such as Quindows and PCDMIS

  • Demonstrated ability to lead in the implementation of new techniques and concepts in inspection areas

  • Demonstrated ability to use CAD software for the design of components at a high level of proficiency

  • Demonstrated ability to use CAM software for the programming of CNC machines at a high level of proficiency

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in operating, programming, and maintaining inspection equipment

  • Familiarity with user performed calibration process, including those on CMMs

  • Demonstrated experience in operating, maintaining and calibration of Hexagon metrology equipment

  • Experience preparing reports and papers on data and findings

  • Experience developing novel ideas written into proposals or presented to both internal and external customers

  • Experience with manual and CNC machining and associated processes

  • Experience in handling radioactive and/or hazardous materials
