What You Will Do
Due to expanding programmatic work in core capability areas related to advanced RF concepts, the Technology Applications group (A-3) is searching for excellent candidates who are interested in making a difference to national security. The ideal R&D Engineer or Physicist will have a broad experience/knowledge base with significant depth in multiple technical areas described below, and will immediately contribute to, lead, and develop projects. Research will be conducted at Q and SCI levels within the Group, which consists of approximately 50 full-time staff from various educational backgrounds including electrical and mechanical engineers, designers, technicians, physicists, and students. This staff member will be expected to work across the breadth of Laboratory resources and expertise to most effectively execute on mission.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Expertise & Excellence
Demonstrated aptitude through either coursework and advanced studies, or previous experience in specialized RF applications to include SDR communications, source location and identification, EMI measurement, or signal processing
Applied experience in Analog or Digital Design, RF/Microwave, and/or Embedded Systems
FPGA programming with experience in radio signal encoding and decoding Programming of complex algorithms, design, and experimentation for SDR applications
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with time and frequency domain acquisition (oscilloscopes, network analyzer, signal generators, spectrum analyzer, TDR) and analysis techniques
Thorough knowledge of and experience with design & analysis tools, such as simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, schematic capture, printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with advanced system design, and data analysis tools, such as Matlab and LabVIEW
Communication & Collaboration
Demonstrated excellence working independently and as a member of a team, with an emphasis on self-initiative and technical leadership to rapidly develop high quality and proven solutions for sponsor needs
Experience working interactively with line management, sponsors, and program managers to include financial tracking and responsibility
Experience providing technical peer review, contributing to ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities, and enhancing the development of junior staff through mentorship and training
Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills
Desired Skills:
Experience with the following:
Low noise analog design and mixed analog/digital systems
High speed analog to digital conversion
Design, synthesis, routing, simulation, testing, and technical documentation of digital circuits and digital communication systems/digital signal processing
Debugging & troubleshooting circuits/prototypes, including fault analysis
Complex network interfacing and design
Anechoic chambers for antenna characterization and/or RF testing
Field collection, signal processing, and data analysis for RF measurements from kHz to Ghz
RF components and their system applications
Fabrication and packaging for RF circuits and systems
Antenna theory, design, modeling, implementation, and measurement
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement advance algorithms enabling real-time analysis and response to data/sensor input
Thorough understanding of cellular, WiFi, and network communication protocol/technologies
Active Q and SCI clearances
Education/Experience: This position requires an advanced degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program in Electrical Engineering, Physics/Applied Physics, or related Engineering discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of 5 years applied experience post-degree is highly desired.

The Technology Applications Group (A-3) uses a broad range of engineering and scientific expertise to support nuclear counter proliferation (NCP), nuclear counter terrorism (NCT), nuclear emergency response (ER) missions, defense, intelligence, and emerging technologies. A-3 has a very diverse customer and program base. The Group contributes to national programs intended to protect, deter, and respond to weapons of mass destruction through tailored training and by using specialized applied electromagnetic solutions, designing/building/testing/delivering tools and trainers along with novel safing technologies, RF solutions, and cyberphysical applications
