Los Alamos National Laboratory RPS Heat Source Design Agency (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

NSPI-DO is looking for an R&D Engineer to support the Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) Heat Source Design Agency. The RPS Program has designated a Design Agency function to be responsible for the heat source design and definition to ensure the products meet all quality and flight safety requirements. The RPS Program is a technology development effort, managed by DOE and NASA, which is strategically investing in nuclear power technologies that maintain NASA’s current space science capabilities and enable space exploration missions. The program is designed to enable more capable future space missions by supporting the development of advanced technologies for power conversion using heat from the natural decay of plutonium-238. NSPI-DO provides the program management function within ALDWP for the RPS Program as well as weapons production missions.

R&D Engineer 2 ($91,800 - $151,400)

The successful candidate will be a part of the RPS Design Agency team responsible for owning, reviewing, updating, and maintaining product drawings and specifications. Their focus will be on longer-term research and documentation projects in such areas as product design history and impacts of change, storage and surveillance requirements, and flight-safety qualification. The candidate will be required to work well in a small team environment, yet interact frequently with stakeholders such as the Production (Manufacturing) and Quality organizations.

R&D Engineer 3 ($110,400 - $186,300)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 will also participate in ongoing Design Agency activities such as reviewing and approving manufacturing procedure updates, and evaluating engineering process changes/updates for potential impacts to product design requirements. They would also support new design development activities, interacting frequently with external customers and agencies.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Minimum Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:

Engineering Experience : Documented record of technical achievement in a relevant engineering discipline, such as mechanical, nuclear, or aerospace engineering

Research & Development : Proven ability to perform independent research and publish results.

Individual Work & Teamwork : Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Communication Skills : Demonstrated record of excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Project Deliverables : Experience meeting deliverable deadlines, both independently and as part of a team.

Conduct of Operations : Previous exposure to or familiarity with conduct of operations in a nuclear or radiological facility.

DOE Order 426.2 : DOE Order 426.2 requires a Bachelor of Science degree and two (2) years of job related experience, and one (1) year of experience working in a Nuclear Facility.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 level requires:

Programs & Manufacturing : Familiarity with the RPS Heat Source program and manufacturing processes.

Conduct of Operations: Demonstrated knowledge of conduct of operations in a nuclear facility.

Quality Assurance : Experience with participating in or performing assessments and reviews of products, procedures, processes, and/or nonconformances.

Customer Communication : Proven ability to successfully work productively with external customers and agencies

R&D Engineer 2 Education requirements: Position requires a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.

R&D Engineer 3 Education requirements: Position requires an advanced degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and at least 10 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of and experience with the RPS Heat Source program and manufacturing processes.

  • Experience working in PF-4 or equivalent nuclear facility.

  • Demonstrated experience working with Design and Production Agencies and/or Product Realization Teams.

  • Knowledge of and experience with NAP-401.1 quality requirements/Defense Programs Business Process System (DPBPS) requirements.

  • Current/active DOE “Q” clearance.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
